    Default LF: Hemi Mechanic Recommendation...

Suggestion for a Hemi (5.7) Mechanic...

Other than dealer...Well dealer as well if anyone has a recommendation.

    2011 Ram 1500 QC Sport 117000 km

I have the P0301 code and if it isn't electric I may need some head work done.

I can swap coils and stuff but if major surgery is required, I need a pro.

    Thanks.

That's the cylinder miss fire code isn't it?
Considering your year and mileage I sure hope its not lifter failure.....

Unsure of any local mechs that could diagnose this for you.

Agreed...however there is no noticable ping and idle is smooth.

When it warms up I am gonna swap coils and see if it helps. Good think I am WFH so I don't need to drive anywhere.

The code is for Cyl #1 so easy to access.

    2011 Hemi... uh oh.

Hate to say it, but I think you're gonna be dealing with a lifter failure. Obviously swap coils and see, but given their track record...

+1 for lifter and cam failure. Fix it soon before it wipes out the rest of the engine!

PS: Check the oil and cut the filter apart to confirm if there is metal in the pan.

    Good luck!

    Call Dave @ Broken Axle

He's a domestic truck guy, had my old Hemi Dodge in at him before and he's a good, reliable, honest guy, which is what you really need for a mechanic

Gear Heads on YouTube have an excellent 2 videos on this. The first should be able to help you diagnose- just based in sound. Obviously coil packs are a possibility as you know, but I too am banking on the camshaft issue. Horrible lack of recognition from Chrysler. But if we learned anything from the constant manifold bolt failure of the Hemi, they simply don't care.

Hoping its just a coil pack for you. Interested to know who you go with to diagnose. I've been pricing out Cam swap parts as preventative maintenance. Feel like my 2010 with 160,000km is any day now....
Plus a new cam would just be a ton of fun.

Broken Axle did some work on my sons Jeep a few years back. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll keep it in mind once I try the stuff I can do myself...

The truck has been relatively maintenance free other that oil changes / tires etc... since I bought it.

Probably due to throw some $$ at it I guess.

Is there enough room in a Ram to pull the camshaft with the engine still in the truck?

Should be warm enough this weekend to have a look. I had a coolant leak from the water pump a month or so ago and had the WP replaced.

Plus I am WFH so its not really required for driving right now.

Hopefully its contamination on #1 coil from the coolant that was sprayed everywhere.

    One can dream right ??

Cripes...from that video it would almost be better to pull the engine.

^ I'd still rather do that than pull an engine from a full sized truck. Might as well do other work while youre in there as well - belts, seals, etc.

Because it was nice(r) outside, I went out today and cleared the code.

Started the engine and let it warm up to operating temp. No code return

Went for a drive around my neighborhood approx 10 kms or so and back to my house. No code return.

    I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm wondering if I dodged a bullet here...

    Good news.
    Hopefully the code stays away.

Broken Axle is temporarily closed while they move shops. Any other recommendations for Hemi Mechanic.
You tube has diagnosed it as a fuel issue.

If I turn the key on but do not try to start, it allows the system to build up fuel pressure and than start successfully. Could be that check valve in the fuel pump.
But a pro can tell for sure.

    Thanks.
