If you have a job, and you've had that job for more than a few years, and you keep that job, that's a "good" place to work. People overthink this.

I spent 7 years at horizon. People shit talk cnrl but I was good with the group of people I worked with. Would still likely be there if it wasn't for another opportunity that popped up.
For me, the group I work with and immediate management is what makes or breaks the company I work for. (total compensation aside of course)

Heh. Just heard some stuff over the last few months. Doesn’t seem like a place I’d want to work. But who knows really. Probably only ever hear the bad. Extra slow is right though. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
What I've heard is that during lean times they try to not lay anyone off, they'll cut salaries instead. And when times are good they'll make it back up to you.
They do however work you like mad all the time.
I've heard this before at my previous company. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Problem was, it was never made up. Anytime the opportunity came up, there was an excuse not to.
This is the unfortunate reality in Calgary at the moment, but it’s not really how it should be IMO.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Call me old fashioned, but my definition of a good job should mean that you are happy with what you’re making (gotta ground yourself and be realistic), motivation to excel (bonus/raise structure), retirement benefits (pensions/rrsp matching), health benefits, good vacation time, happy with your peers/management, not constantly working overtime, training opportunities, has opportunities for promotions and overall just being content going to work.
This stuff used to be pretty standard to expect in Calgary and it’s a shame people have become so jaded that simply having a semi-stable job and getting paid means things are good.
I had a job like that once. Was pretty sweet. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Despite all the shit talk happing in industry for CNRL they are still having several hundred applications for each job they post. They had a thermal facility posting a few weeks back that had "a relatively low amount of applications" at ~210 people.

I think they eventually gave back the 33% cut, but kept the other 10+10% in place. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

If that was the standard, then Calgary is literally the only city in Canada where you could find jobs like that. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Guy there told me that they posted for a job, got 7000 applications and then the job site crashed. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
That's not old fashioned, as much as it is simply a bit out of touch, IMO. That's not a sustainable model - you basically just described the country club O&G company mentality and op model. And you can get those things elsewhere now, but not without sacrifice (e.g., tech has good everything except work-life balance). This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Speaking of country club O&G, do you guys remember flex days on top of generous vacation? 5 week plus 12 days was my person best.

Are flex days gone? Damn.
They are still around. Shell and Suncor have 12 per year. Imperial still has EDOs, I wanna say 12 per year but it might be 18 or 24.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Just much more rare than they used to be. Probably 100 companies that offered them in 2007.

That's good. I think the last year my wife worked at Shell they cut back the number of flex days. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I had them when I worked at a non-O&G company, it sure was nice. I could never use them all + all my vaca days, one year I was forced to take an entire month off as a result.
Yeah it used to be 17 + 2 floaters. Combine that with 6 weeks of vacation (25 years of service) and that’s close to two full months of days off. Almost impossible to use that up if you have any serious level of responsibility in the company.
lol
