Most of the remaining grid didn't lift when the yellow flags came on for a moment after gasly blew his tire, Max and Bottas in trouble

Oh fuck...people on Insta were saying Max couldn't beat Lewis' time because he got lucky yet again cause Max got the yellow flags, so if they didn't even lift due to it that means he did try his best regardless. Interesting.

I doubt anything significant would come out of this since it's not one driver that did this but the entire grid.

lol, 5 grid penalty for Verstappen. What a late FIA'n decision.

Pretty sure the maFIA broke their own rules on that one.

We all knew yesterday there wouldn't be a decision until 1PM or so local time. Not surprising that the penalties were given out considering a similar incident that happened in 2020.

Also, WTF was Mercedes thinking about keeping Bottas out longer. They had a 30+ second gap to 4th place and didn't pit Bottas.

Quite a boring race. The only thing that made it exciting was Perez climbing through the field. Other than that, BOOOOOORRRRRRRIIINNNGGG!!!!

The decision was after 1pm local time, wasn't it? I think it was less than an hour before race start.

I wasn't surprised by the penalties but was surprised that Carlos Sainz didn't receive one. I'm sure he enjoyed wearing Ferrari Red this weekend...

There were a lot of good battles in the mid-field. I actually enjoyed the race - a lot more passing than expected plus all the drama and uncertainty with the tires near the end.

I'm sure both Red Bull and Mercedes will be questioning their race strategies wrt Checo and Bottas.

I know it's been a week, but have some time this morning, so I'll bite.

I'm not sure what you're looking at? If your wheel is turned to the left, but your car is going straight, that's called understeer.
In car video was posted earlier. Overlaid with the telemetry, Max did not understeer. He simply had no turn in angle in the steering wheel, let off the brakes to block, and once Ham aborted his move to go off track, Max turned in, then floored it through the runoff.

You said dirt. I literally quoted you.

Common man, you know enough about this sport to be aware that the other side of the curb is covered with dust and fine debris and has no rubber lay down. If you are honestly saying that there is no subsequent penalty to yourself by driving on that section of the track, then you are being extremely disingenuous about this debate.
Yes, the runoff is dirty. No, there was no traction issues for Max off the track as it was a medium speed corner, with plenty of downforce and he took it with minimal steering angle. The telemetry supported that. Full throttle, no oversteer correction, no backing off throttle, and linear increase in speed. For Hamilton, it was a different story, as he turned more to get back on the track, was way further out, and had to feather the throttle through the turn along with oversteer correction. The speed traces literally showed the speed advantage of Max on lap 48 compared to Hamilton on 48, as well as compared to himself on 47 being on the track. The way he went off, he built up way more speed compared to being on track at the same position.

Optimally for Max, he would've forced Lewis off track, but got a clean getaway himself before crossing the curb. Would've made defending easier at Hamiltons next attempt.
He would've had to slow down massively to do that, but Ham would not be allowed to pass him (assuming he had a chance) as it would've been Ham that went off track, broke track limits, and can't use any advantage he gained on Max as it would've been deemed a lasting advantage.

The problem is that Max was passed on the straight, blocked Ham by going way too fast into T4, went off track, and gained a lasting advantage to maintain his position prior to T4.

10l%. It was an excellent race if the title battle is secondary. If you only care about max vs ham, then ya it wasn’t very eventful. The race was 10x better than Mexico where literally nothing happened.

Norris pitting out of nowhere broke me. Again.

    F1 noob question.

Near the end of the race it seemed like a significant amount of flat tires on the left front in a short period of time... was that an example of pushing the tires too far, or track debris?

Pirelli warned that this could be a problem on this track during long stints. There were a couple troubles at this track that are different than some of the other tracks this season. This track in particular has longer corners, which makes it particularly harder on the front tires, the front left tire being the biggest struggle on this track. It's particularly why the Red Bull wasn't as fast because of it's tendency towards understeering.

The other reason is that the second curbs on this track seemed to be really hard on the cars and tires, specifically some body work damage. So speculation that carbon went into tire and caused a small puncture. You could see form the failures that they did not instantaneously fail, but slowly lost all pressure quickly.

Pirelli is getting all the telemetry to see what happened, but don't know how much info they will release.

The medium tires were rated for 30 laps and the people who got flats were over that in tire age. Going wider on this track proved faster and running on the curbs increases wear.
Fernando made it work and the VSC saved him at the end.

He even has a PR person walking beside him.

On another note (and this will likely trigger the Max fans out there), this seems like an awfully disingenuous poke at the Stewards, especially after the no-investigation in Brazil:

"I never get presents from them [the Stewards]."

No surprises there. Once a whiner, always a whiner. Nothing new there. It's not just Max though, it's Horner and the entire RBR culture.
