Bottas himself said that each race they pick who goes ahead and this round it was Lewis' turn so he decided to choose to go behind him to take advantage of the slipstream. I don't see anything wrong with that. Leclerc only got pole because he got Lewis' slipstream, is there anything wrong with that? And just because of a slipstream factor one person qualifies second and the other tenth in essentially the same car speaks volumes about the skill level of each person on its own.
Well if you were paying attention over the weekend both cars were struggling due to a new rear wing/change of aerodynamic strategy. Ham nor Bottas could even breach the top 10. Merc decided to change it back for Ham, who was noticeably faster without the new 'upgrade' package, but left Bottas on the shitty package.

I would call it luck to have been handed the best car (often not even close) for years. And then piled lucky events/full course yellows at the right time.

He's talented, maybe even the best of his era. But that argument ends short of him coming anywhere close to being GOAT.
Yep, that's the way I see it as well. He's certainly skilled. But the GOAT?

Throughout f1 history there's been tons of great drivers/champions that go to a crap car and struggle just like everyone else. F1 success highly car/performance dependent, usually set up with skill to get you into the best car but not always (sponsorships, money, etc have been considerations). Look at Villeneuve, who arguably has one of the best resumes after winning Indy Car champ, Indy 500, and an F1 title. Was he lucky? Mechanically etc then yes Id say a bit. Did he had the skill and experience to keep winning titles like Lewis? I would absolutely say so. But due to the timing/era Williams started struggling and his stats/position struggled hugely, having to go to BAR, Renault, etc.

The same could be said for so many drivers. What about Prost? Or Lauda? Or Schumacher going back to Merc? Or Kimi? Or Alonso? Mansell? I mean the list goes on.

Senna on the other hand, IMO the goat, is someone that just dominates in whatever car he drives. Look at the shitty Toleman which he got multiple podiums with... Or the lotus he had in his early years where he made waves in the f1 world and clearly throwing down the gauntlet as an absolute talent. But he dominated in his years with any car he was given. Sure, he had to play some politics and get into a competitive car, but he had way more to do than simply stay at Mercedes while they dominated the f1 world for a decade.

If lewis went to Ferrari last year and kept dominating, Id say you would have a point about being the GOAT. But he just sticks with what has worked in his comfort zone, on a team that had almost untouchably and consistently dominated the turbo-hybrid era.

Are you talking about qualifying? Because if you are that’s all part of team strategy. You get 2 q3 runs so you take turns going first to rotate against track evolution advantage or flag disadvantage on the 2nd run. Every team does this. Do you know what happens when you race each other during qualifying? See Hungary 2007.
Every team does that because they have to get up the grid as they have to compete with each other. Who are Merc competing with..? I only see Max offering some sort of bite, but he's right on the limit (hell he might have chugged a few cans of Red Bull to get there too). Merc are top dog and Bottas has been crap. You have two great cars and Mercedes have been more about management than the racing. Fair play its worked out for them. But I don't see Bottas doing a Alonso.

If Lewis was ‘lucky’ he wouldn’t have gotten the delayed pit stop by 2 seconds due to Gasly coming out on the side. Had he not been delayed by 2 seconds there, he would have likely been ahead of Max and for sure ahead of Checko when they came out of pit stops. If he was lucky, he would have been 1 and not last and get no points. Seriously, it’s all getting old calling him lucky while everyone else is talented, especially Max. It’s time to acknowledge that you need skill and a bit of luck to make it to the top in this sport there is nothing wrong with either, but saying someone is on the top and has been for almost a decade, just because of luck and no skill is quite unfair.
Lewis IS a great driver. However he is also the luckiest MF to ever drive F1. To not admit he is lucky is just some weird fanboi love. It's mind boggling how many times things have happened to him that would ruin a drivers race, and he somehow pulls a rabbit out of his ass to come out of it smelling like roses.

Also, nothing has been stopping other teams to make better cars for all these years.
    lolwut

Nothing stopping them except money, or lack thereof, and having a team with superior engineering/innovation capability (which is something that money can buy)

Well if you can't afford to compete then perhaps you should spend your money elsewhere and not worry about competing.

Also, it's difficult for the top directors/managers to leave one team and to go another without some gardening leave in there so talent can have trouble moving in between teams.

What do you anticipate would happen to racing, or any other sport for that matter, if you applied that theory (don't come out if you probably won't win)?

I think the solution would be to give every team participation trophies. That would align F1 with current norms and make them more appealing to the masses.

If you want every team to drive the same car, there is a solution to that.

And FIA is already nanny'ing all this as it is by putting expenditure caps etc. to level the playing field.

Lewis is the Kanye of F1.. lots of talent, questionable fashion choices.

I hate watching this track on TV. heads up for the TSN guys its on TSN 5 this week thanks to all the Euro coverage so make sure you recordings are on.

Who do you think takes it on this track?
    Max or Lewis?

    I wouldn't say it's nanny'ing.

Look at salary caps of other sports teams and they seem to be doing fine.

After watching practice, all I can say is that the little curbs around Turn 2 could have paid to solve poverty in Chad.
