I am sure it is a govt program that the retailer has to pay a specific amount to the govt, i would imagine canadian tire is just making a few extra bucks off people who cant be bothered to do the core, or maybe costco is taking a bit of a hit to discourage people from returning them because they don't want to deal with it.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. (EDIT: i cant find anything that says it's a govt deal, i think it's just an excuse for retailers to take on an extra fee and they charge whatever they want because then they get to scrap em for around the same amount, my brother works for a towing company and i think he said he gets $15 scrap price for most automotive batteries)

i would imagine any core refund, especially canadian tire, would require a corresponding purchase.
