    Default INDOOR Trainer

Looking for something I can set my mountain bike in that I can ride indoors in the winter months and stop being such a fat POS. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

There's a few ways to answer this question - do you have the motivation to ride the trainer with no way of recording the ride (as in, spin for an hour and watch netflix?). Or do you want to be able to record the ride, or do you want to be able to ride with others in a virtual world or perform workouts?

Cheaper option - buy a wheel on trainer like a Cycleops Fluid 2 or something similar and a trainer tire. You can put your mountain bike on a "dumb trainer". Depending on how new your mountain bike is, it may have a through axle in the back and this would make this option slightly more complicated. If it's a regular quick release axle, you're good to go. Can find this used on Kijiji/FB for <$200 if you shop around.

Middle option - Wheel on trainer with some way to measure speed/cadence or power. This allows you do ride on Zwift or do workouts in TrainerRoad or other programs and record them on a garmin unit or pair to an ipad. ~$300 for trainer + tire + sensors if you shop around.

Expensive option - direct drive trainer (replaces your rear wheel). This is the nicest option for workouts and Zwift or other programs. I have an Elite Direto X and love it, but it's a $1200 trainer.

I bought a fluid trainer off Amazon for $220 ish and I love it. I use a road bike on it that I bought off kijiji. I heard mountain bikes are super loud on the trainer. The road bike isn’t to bad for sound level. I still need to buy a trainer tire.

I have my cheap Hybird bike on a Cycleops Fludid trainer. I have been using this for about 10 Years. It does the job. Nothing fancy. It is a dumb setup.
As others pointed out there are way better options out there right now. It all depends on how much you want to spend and what options you are looking for.

This is all about running a trainer tire. A knobby mountain bike tire on a trainer will be loud, overheat, and send chunks of rubber flying. Road tires do better as they're smoother, but a trainer tire shouldn't "shed" at all.

Yeah this is all I’m looking for. Just something to get exercising.

Check Kijiji and stuff, too. I bought a cheap entry-level "dumb" fluid trainer from Kinetic a year and a half ago to get some spinning in. Had it set-up in my condo and loved it; they're a bit noisier than some of the top-end trainers, though, so keep that in mind if you have a small space.
