Default Do I need a better router?

Right now I am still living with the inlaws. My wife is going to start working from home, but the latency test fails at 95ms, but we need better than 88ms.

I just have the regular router telus gives to you, so its probably shit. The PC is brand new, it literally has nothing but the system installed on it and its plugged into ethernet 2 feet away from the router. Speed tests are fine.

What do I do? If I need one, what do I look for?

Literally anything will be better than what Telus provides you for wifi.

88ms is a very specific requirement lol

Also what ES said, I personally won’t work on wifi it’s nowhere near good enough. Wires fixes everything.

Something is up, but my normal responses to this are all about getting better wireless.

Someone smart will be along soon. I am just a placeholder.

If my ISP was getting me 100ms wired latency I would be making a service call

if you are connected DIRECTLY to the ISP shit box (no switch, etc.) - and are getting 100ms ping wired - reboot or factory reset the thing. I get 8ms on a 10 year old laptop thats on wifi.

If it still persists its a service call for latency. Could be the wiring to the res, or the box itself.

And yes, if you are serious about having decent network speeds - put the ISP box in bridge mode + get your own router (Asus, ubiquiti).

This is just the requirements I have no idea for what. I just did my own ping and im at 24, but if I do it through their login website( in the US) it is too low.

Try some speed tests elsewhere. Maybe that website is shitty.

Then 24 is still in the range of fine.

Might be a call to whoever is managing whatever IT system your wife is logging into that is clearly piling latency onto the connection.

Are you comparing what you get from a speed test (local server) to what you get from that US website?

They're going to be different. Telus could have poor routing to it. Shaw might be better but you'd have to test.

Do a tracert in the cmd and see what the route is like.

Doesn't sounds like it an issue with the router even thought it is crap.

You should be less then 10ms even on wifi on your local network to your router. The rest is up to distance to the destination... typically to the us from Canada is 60 - 120 ms .

That's exactly it. Destination to the US i knew would be more, but almost 4x more is crazy to me. I figured maybe a better router would give me a better latency but maybe not.

I'm on the phone with telus to see if there's anything else that can be done.
