    Default Dumb NAS?

A segue off @rage2 ’s thread, I want to replace my homeserver (running WHS no less) with a NUC for Plex. Need a NAS that’s basically dumb and just serves files.

Most Of the NAS’s I see tout decoding ability and other shit that I won’t need as the NUC should take care of that.

Basically looking for a multi drive enclosure. Does that exist?

Would that make it a DAS?

Essentially a NAS that connects with USB (/thunderbolt)

    https://www.qnap.com/solution/das-for-pc/en/

Owc has made these things for years (Mac bias but they should work fine with anything )

    https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/external-storage

Basically just a hardware raid enclosure.

Haha, yes DAS. I kept searching for NAS. I guess you need and OS and a chip if you want a DAS connected via Ethernet. I suppose a USB-C connection to the NUC is just as fast.

I posted a couple examples above, the OWC ones can be relatively affordable (scroll down past the high performance stuff for video editing )

    QNAPs can act as both.

I've got one of these, it even handles the Raid 5 for me. I've been using it for 5 years or more, replaced a few drives but never had a total data loss.

I have it hooked up to a truenas box, it's probably slow but it's mostly just backup/archive for me. I am sure newer stuff would be faster

I have an old pc running FreeNAS with a UPS. I think I am over a year on uptime. Works perfectly if you want to go the cheap route

Out of curiosity... what part of any of this sounds cheap to people?

I have a fairly high tolerance for expensive electronics, and I’ve always wanted a little NAS / lab myself, but I have never been able to justify the cost... The way I see it there is no way around a NAS with a few high cap disks setup for redundancy that doesn’t cost a grand. Seems like a lot of money to me for glorified home file backup.

Especially relative to the costs of cloud storage / computing these days (I get this isn’t an option for everything, but it is for most things ).

Again I think it’s cool and fun but it really somewhere I want to park a thousand dollars? Not a chance.

People just offset the costs by pirating media or something?

some people see value in their photos and other digital documents, and prefer to have those things be private.

Sure. I’m just saying it’s far from cheap.

I think cheap is relative, when companies pay $15k+ for a single server and storage (and typically have many servers depending on the size)... $1000 is cheap.

Get you basic hardware RAID5 and your NUC can do all the work on transcode. Look like setting dip switch for RAID level and throw drives in. That's as cheap as they go.
