    Default 1959 Mercedes 190SL Restoration

I've been working on this restoration for the past 2 years and figured I might as well share it here on the forum. Originally my father bought the car used in 1964 and it was driven till the mid to late 70s. Since then it has been sitting idle in the garage. I took the car from him a couple years back and have started on the restoration.

I've been doing all the mechanical work and the body is at friends body shop who does a lot of restoration projects. Current status of the build is most of the metal and fabrication work is complete. They are on to the final refitting of the body panels. I've completed the front and rear end rebuilds and the engine is about 95% complete.

I'll update this thread to show how the project has progressed so far. For now here is quick pic of when I first picked up the car from my father. For those not familiar with old Mercedes, it is the one on the left. The other is a 1969 300 SEL 6.3 which I also obtained from my father.

100% jealous. I looked into getting a Pagoda as a summer fun car but man the prices are ridiculous. Can't even imagine what these would go for.

Can't wait to see the progress!

Here are some close ups of the exterior. The left rear fender was dented from an accident.

The original colour is strawberry red. It's faded quite a bit over the years. I will be painting it the original colour.

I have actually never seen a 190SL on the roads here in Calgary. I did see that one from Calgary sold on bringatrailer a few weeks back. Was that yours?

Some under the hood shots. Some items had already been disassembled at this point such as the carbs.

I love all those old SLs. When my father bought the 190SL the dealer also had 300SL roadster for sale at the same price but it was already quite a few years older than the 190SL. Turned out he should have gone for the 300 as those are worth a fortune now.

These are from the start of the tear down. Some additional bracing was welded in to keep everything straight while it was on the rotisserie.

I know everyone has a hard-on for the SL these days, but I'm all about that 6.3 dictator-mobile.

The 6.3 has to be one of the most difficult cars to work on. There is absolutely no room under the hood with that big motor shoe horned in there. It had also sat not running for approximately 20 years. I did quite a bit of work to renew the fuel system including having the injection pump rebuilt. Eventually I plan to do a full restoration on it as well as it does have some rust underneath in the rockers and fender wells. I'll add some pics to this thread rather than starting a new one since I'm not actually working on that project at the moment.
