    Default $2T Green New Deal

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/biden-...ture-1.5970866

The White House says the largest chunk of the proposal includes $621 billion for roads, bridges, public transit, electric vehicle charging stations and other transportation infrastructure. The spending would push the country away from internal combustion engines that the auto industry views as an increasingly antiquated technology.

I’m at least as triggered by how often people quote CBC on here

Hilarious that Biden thinks corporations will “pay for it” with no cost passed on to citizens.

I don't know much, but I don't understand the economics of this. Although money for brides and infrastructure sounds like money for automobile drivers, so that's a big yay, as someone who doesn't pay taxes in that country.

This is what the American voters get for putting dems into both the Senate and House.

The American government works better when it can't get anything done

I don’t think that’s a quality exclusive to American government, it’s a side effect of all governments.

    Less government is better government.

Same with tariffs. Americans are pissed that hoarding GPUs thru the Canadian border cost them extra 20% and all the custom clearing fees.

And most of their stuff went up 30-40% thru the Obama years via multiple rounds of QEs.

Also, google 1st return on this story is Al Jazeera, not sure if that's better or worse than CBC from a CSIS perspective.

Will they even be able to convince 10 republicans to vote for this in the Senate with all this Green stuff? I doubt it, so its probably dead in the water for a while until the next Reconciliation Bill opportunity (next year?)

Don't they just need a majority which they have.

There will be 10 bridges to nowhere in that bill eventually.

No, there's this rule in the Senate that says bills need 3/5 votes to pass. Exceptions are yearly Reconciliation Bills that only require simple majority but i believe they used that up on the 1.9T stimulus they just passed. There's some weird nuances around the rules so maybe they can somehow figure out a workaround to classify this as Reconciliation. Not holding my breath on that though because Democrats traditionally suck at this stuff.

What they really need to do is eliminate that rule and change all bill passing to simple majority instead of 3/5 (and only requires a simple majority to change it), but there are two conservative/hardline democrats that won't support it. Yes that means the next time republicans have control that they can ram their priorities through, but that's how it should be IMO. Let the governing party govern because people need to understand that elections have consequences.

Truth. Bribing is acceptable but only if its to convince Senators of the opposing party to support you in exchange for a few jobs in their state.

They get one chance per year to pass a "big one" then the other 50 weeks they bicker back and forth

So is it the money allotted for the installation of electric charging stations that makes this a "Green" deal?

Our system is about to get us a JT majority so that he can behave like a little emperor. I'd kill for a stalemate here.

I think the CBC article was pre conference.

John Kerry just told fossil fuel industry to go make some solar panels back in Jan.

John Kerry, Biden’s top environmental policy adviser, took criticism for telling reporters at a Wednesday briefing that “what President Biden wants to do is make sure those folks have better choices. That they have alternatives. They can be the people to go to work to make the solar panels.”

This one's tone is dialed back:

    • Modernize 20,000 miles of highways, roads and streets.

    • Repair 10 of the most significant bridges in need of fixing, and repair 10,000 of the worst, smaller bridges.

    • Double federal funding for public transportation and bring rail and bus services to communities that have been systematically excluded from those resources.

    • Build a network of 500,000 electrical vehicle chargers, replace 50,000 diesel transit vehicles and electrify 20% of the yellow bus fleet (school buses).

    • Provide $50 billion to make infrastructure more climate resilient and target 40 percent of that investment to disadvantaged communities.

    • Pay for extending broadband to rural Americans, improving water quality, strengthening the electric grid and building affordable housing.

    • Replace 100 percent of lead pipes and service lines in the U.S., and reduce lead exposure in 400,000 schools and child care facilities.

    • Spend $400 billion in expanding access to affordable home or community-based care for thousands of seniors and people with disabilities to support long-term care.

But it looks like compromise = nobody is happy.

Actually was expecting more spent. Biden also wants a real semiconductor factory to compete with TSMC.

The smart thing to do would be to convert a nuclear power plant into a solar PV panel plant (silicon ingot production).

It takes a ridonkulous amount of circulated water through a nuclear plant to cool it to a level where it is safe to turn through a turbine. If its too much over 100 celsius without proper pressurization, all you get is steam - which is crap for turning a turbine.

"Nuclear power is one hell of a way to boil water" - Einstein.

A standard nuke-lar reaction creates the one thing you really need to melt silicon, ridiculous amounts of concentrated heat. The only silicon isotope that might be a problem would be 32si.
