their entire provincial population is also less than calgary alone... they're naturally physically distanced because there's nobody there.
Their population is still congregated in major cities for the most part. Just like us.

Have to work in order to pay those electricity bills. Can't work if your job is shut down. Definitely can't tell ERCOT to go fuck themselves, that would be un-American.

If you ask me, the people should pay their bills. Assuming that the people went to floating were saving $20 to $40 per month over a period of almost a decade, the one time a freak event happens its normal that they should pay a few thousand dollar bill.

People were betting that Texas was infallable in energy production.

You just described most of the oil patch from 1996 to 2014.
I only know a few transplanted oilpatch workers, but they always did everything possible to be in Alberta for Christmas to pay Alberta taxes because of lower tax rates. The difference in the wfh, typically tech crowd is that Toronto salaries are generally much higher than Alberta tech salaries, so even paying Ontario tax rates than to have a lower salary against Alberta rates.

Don’t even get started with people getting paid Bay Area salaries coming here to live on the cheap.

So ya, I believe this is an entirely new problem. Companies are doing everything to crack down on this so maybe it’s not going to be a problem for long.

Sales tax would help capture benefits from transient workers for sure.
Sales tax would capture part of it. Still a lot left on the table.

The whole different salary for different location concept is going to break down one way or the other in the next decade. The flaws are becoming obvious now, but the solution is not yet apparent. Tech folks will figure it out somehow.

Not sure what to tell you.

It’s open for the most part. Shit, they can have a 30 person wedding! Way more open than us.

So I followed up, apparently gyms were closed was more like: I dont want to wear a mask, so they might as well be closed. And small stores were closed forever vs big box stores, but are open now. So mostly just Facebook ranting from the sounds of it.

I didnt mean to take a shot at you, I was just surprised by your comment, vs the info I'm seeing, but that info was heavily colored after all.

My old company had the same pay for the position nationwide. It's one of the reasons I left, because in Calgary we were doing 8x the work, with far worse shifts than the other cities.

My Vancouver coworkers bitch about not getting paid more all the time. You were mobile before covid, you will be mobile after covid, choose where you live accordingly.

I was surprised to see this in the news because AFAIK Texas has been pretty openly doing this since March 2020. As someone else mentioned, the snow storms they have been getting have probably done more to isolate people than anything else haha.

'Governor declares state open and drops Covid safety measures against health professional advice, but his residence is closed for tours citing Covid safety measures' is just some good political hypocrisy to get a chuckle at during these unprecedented and trying times. Stay safe and healthy.

It's just telling citizens that their lives have a price, but his doesn't.

Calgary population density is still almost 50% higher than their highest city (regina) which only has 200k people to begin with... (unless you consider the metro areas, then regina is less than 1/5 the density of calgary)

Not to mention we're beside that grubby BC hippie place that now has the most new cases per capita in Canada.

    All is good.
