, I'll spring for more expensive thicker vinyl planks, as I think that should be more forgiving and require less rework.

I would think the thicker planks would be less forgiving. Or we talking flooring?

the vinyl planks. I'm thinking thicker ones would have stronger and more forgiving interlocking grooves. I busted a few of the grooves off truing to hammer the planks into place. That's probably mostly a technique issue, but that just reinforces my point that a non-professional installer isn't going to have very good technique.
