Lino over carpet - temporary art room

Can anyone set me straight on this? Is it possible to lay cheapass linoleum over carpet in a temporary manner? We have a spare bedroom that is now used only for arts and crafts. Could I lay some cheapass lino over the carpet for a few years as a kind of drop cloth? I have furniture around the outside of the room already, so that might hold it down and prevent it curling too much. Maybe.

Is that genius or stupid?

I can't picture this being feasible unless you put sheets of OSB on the carpet, first - then lino.

Garage tiles? Have a bit more rigidity to satisfy TPim's inner EIT

I would drop down sheets of 3/8" plywood to cover the area, then whatever you want overtop. Those linoleum tile things are pretty cheap, very easy to DIY and can be had in a variety of colors/patterns. Depending on the size of the room, should be easily <$500.

Anything direct over carpet will be unstable when walking near an easle, etc plywood over carpet would be more stable but not great. Both still run the risk of something spilling and seeping along the edge and staining the carpet.

I would honestly just cut the carpet out, roll it up and save it for reinstallation. Even if it doesn't go back down properly, carpet replacement (or hardwood) for a single bedroom is cheap.

It's actually very easy to pull up the carpet and keep it for later - you can do this in a matter of minutes. You'll have to pull up the tack strips but those things are super cheap.

Might as well, carpet, even good carpet is not expensive. Just don't do stairs.

Frankly, I'm less worried about the carpet getting trashed, and more want something I can clean. Paint spills on carpet are a nightmare, and can easily turn into tracking paint around the rest of the goddamnned house. Whereas lino, you can wipe it up "good enough" in five minutes.
