Well so much for Telecom diversification, do the feds still have to approve this?

I am sure it needs the Federal Approval. However I can't see them blocking this considering Bell already took MTS and last year Rogers made a serious push to get Cogeco.

If Shaw was buying rogers, it would be blocked. Rogers buying shaw will get approved.

This is very big though. Lotta die-hard shaw folks in Alberta will be pissed.

I can’t see this being a good thing for Canadian consumers. Cell phone plan prices came down big time the past year or two primarily cuz of competition from Shaw. Expect pricing to go up across the board in a few years after the dust settles.

As a condition of the sale, Bell agreed to divest one-third of MTS Mobility's wireless subscribers and MTS retail locations to Telus; the divestment aimed to give the three national carriers (Bell, Rogers, and Telus) a roughly equal market share in Manitoba. (Wiki)

I understand that was a net 1m subscriber add, to TELUS.

I’m sure there’s going to be conditions on this, and that Bell & Telus will challenge the sale.

It’s not like Shaw is some altruistic saint to begin with. I do t see how Rogers is any worse than Shaw.

Shaw family going to be driving around some ballin rides out of this, if any of them are dumb enough to stick around here.

If this goes through, I hope Rogers brings their FTTH service to Western Canada.

Also, I see Freedom getting merged into Fido in due time.

I doubt freedom will be allowed to stay under the umbrella

Rogers is positioning the purchase as 5G and rural expansion, which is pretty much bullshit. Shaw only has minimal 5G spectrum licenses compared to Rogers. As for rural, there's no money in it.

This sale is all about buying market share.

Inevitable due to 5G cost. Am surprised Shaw lasted this long with cable TV side ain't printing $ any more.

Does this mean that 4K TV may be in the future? Seems like Shaw was pretending 4K didn’t exist.

The sooner cable tv dies as even an offering the better. Streaming for life!

Not via Shaw which is the problem. Also when it comes to NFL you either have cable feed or DAZN which is between 720 - 1080p.

NFL is largely NOT available in 4K.

    https://www.techhive.com/article/360...this-year.html

Hockey is available very selectively, and I think basketball is fairly available.

Shaw does not offer any 4k programming no matter what BS they are slinging this week.
