But but but QUALITY and CHECKING!!!!!

"I'd feel better if that form needed 4 signatures on it instead of only two."
Interestingly I would say the biggest source of signatures and things like that came down to increased accountability, or at least that's what they all thought they were doing.

There is only increased accountability if city employees had consequences for their actions.

The consequences of doing wrong in a city Union, is that you get promoted. People fail upward, hence the current manager situation.

Don't disagree. I wasn't in a union environment but it was a problem.

The flip side of that, is that there is no incentive for doing a great job. The additional organization that was undertaken by my group to make sure we did things well all the time was only viewed as a hindrance to getting more done. The reward for doing good work in a Municipality is getting more work dumped on you. It's not an environment that encourages excellence.

I hate to break it to you, but that's the reward for doing good work in pretty much any business, even more so in successful ones. Do good work, get more work, do that work well, get promoted (and get more work), and so on.

A depressing observation I have heard often is that job satisfaction in your career is inversely proportional to square footage of glass in your office haha.

Inversely proportional to the square... Fucking hell that's some EIT level math there. I can't keep up.

I do believe I have identified the problem.

Certainly it's also a measure of risk. Long term reward trade off in the public sector is job security. Private sector, depending on size and type of business is less likely to be so and is more monetarily related. Also efficiency is much more appreciated in private sector management as opposed to public sector management as well. Change is not welcome in the public sector as a result. It's a lot deeper than I may make it sound.

I prefer the risks associated in the private sector and the likelihood of being surrounded by more like minded people.

Back in NS I worked a a 4-on 6-off shift schedule, worked out to 35 hours a week if I remember correctly... it was awesome. Granted, the lower wage + living cost made it less attractive than it would be out here, if I had the opportunity to shave 5 hours off my week to do that schedule I'd do it without question.
