    Default Pro-Rated Battery Math

(Better title maybe would've been Barttery Marth...)

Ok, so I had a Canadian Tire battery that's dying/dead and it had a total of 108 months of warranty with the first 36 months being free replacement because I bought the expensive Eliminator.

Here is the word by word formula for their pro-rated calculation:
REGULAR RETAIL SELLING PRICE AT THE TIME OF RETURN TO A CANADIAN TIRE ASSOCIATE STORE DIVIDED BY THE TOTAL MONTHS OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD MULTIPLIED BY THE TOTAL MONTHS OF SERVICE RECEIVED.

The same battery today is about $150 and it looks like I got 99 months out of 108 on it.

How the fuck do they interpret those words in order to calculate the roughly zero dollars I know they'd actually owe me?!?
I know how these warranties work. I'm not asking that. If I returned it as faulty about 1 month in, they'd owe me almost $150 toward a replacement and if it returned it 107 months in, they'd owe me some pennies. I get it.

I just can't seem to figure out how those words translate into a free battery at the start of the term and zero after 107 months. They need to make the denominator ~1 at the start of the term and really really large at the end of the term, but... That's not what that statement says! It makes it seem like they owe me $138 and I'm pretty confident they don't.

What am I missing, here? LoL!!

The wording sorta sucks. But you've used 99/108 months, so you've used 92% of the lifespan, so you get credit for the 8% remaining. Or $12 credit.

    Their wording is horse shit.

    - - - Updated - - -

Or maybe a better way to look at it is the NEW battery will cost you $150x99/108 = $138.

Ahhhh, that's it! It's not about the portion they cover, it's a formula to decide what they charge me!!
Now I think it adds up!
What a stupid way of wording it!

Canadian Tire is stupid. So that checks out.

So I left about $12 on the table but then purchased a better battery for $40 less at Costco that has a warranty I'll actually be able to claim, if needed. That Marth actually checks out.
Rhodes Scholar at Cdn Tire "looked it up" and told me I'd have no warranty left before I even bothered trying to get it tested there (which also would've been a "nah brah - dis battery minty" because testings).
Found paperwork after and got to head scratching... "So they'd credit me 1.4 cents near the beginning of the term and almost the entire value at the end of the term... Something feels tingly in my dingly..."

This thread is exceedingly un-MEGA... I wish you didn't crack the code so early!

Over 8 years for a battery in our climate for a DD is pretty decent actually. My Eliminator only made it 6 years, and it was never overnighted outside and never drained to 0.

People like Costco for the no hassle warranty. But if you travel to smaller towns, consider NAPA, because they have more locations then anyone, which is important if your battery need replacement in Hinton or Pincher Creek.

Didn't Costco's battery policy just recently change because of people abusing the system? I could have swore i seen a RFD post about it being a traditional prorated warranty now.

Yes, that's a good point and I recall you saying that, before.
I've converted to the "proactive battery replacement" lifestyle since that last battery that died ~99 months ago left me in a tough spot at -35degC. This recent one never truly died, but was definitely end of life and I'll swap another one into the wife's car while she's having her weekly consultation with our competent team of pool management professionals.
Parasitic losses and the constantly running bullshit in these more modern cars blow me away. One of mine will kill a Yellow Top if parked for 2 weeks!

Every car should have a battery tender on it if parked a week or more.

That was the fastest turn around of a post to a signature I've ever seen.

Was it ever that good?!? That's crazy. I always thought it was a regular, comparable pro-rated thing, which is quite reasonable. If it goes to shit in first 2-3 years, chances are it was defective and after that, you should really only get partial credit.
