Bridge only a hair shorter than the golden gate by total span.

Fuckkk is it even possible to rebuild a project like that in 2024? We tend to suck at this sort of thing these days, definitely wouldn’t be possible to rebuild in Canada. Too many spotted otters or some nonsense.

    They shouldn't have done that.

Americans will do it. There will be massive push from the unions to get a job like this going, and if The Wire taught me anything, they have a lot of pull.

On qualifiedcaptain instagram there's a good video where it points out the two power losses and recoveries before it hits.

I read that it's too deep to drop anchor there, would have done nothing.
Random useless fact: is that the anchor itself does very little in stopping a large ships motion but instead it's the length of chain itself that gets strung out along the sea bed that provides the friction to actually hold a ship in place. The chain itself weighs many times more than the anchor.

I wonder if it's a full rebuild or they can salvage portions of the existing bridge? Hopefully it was designed so the concrete supports in the water would be intact and the metal portion is what twisted and got fucked.

Exactly. I'd say that fact is actually not useless in this context.

Coefficient of friction in viscous fluid - any amount of chain in the water has stabilizing and slowing effect. Like those guys running with kites/parachutes on their backpack

Is that your first reaction to this?

Multiple people likely died. Latest update said 3-4 of the people that are still missing had babies within the last year.

Even if it's just one. That's too many.

That's exactly what comes into my head. I wonder what the insurance situation will be and how much they are going to chase after the ship owner/operator for the rebuild. It's going to tie up in court for years before they get to start.

Container ship registry needs to be created. These things are dangerous!

But yes, let me also be soft on this. I think all personnel in that bridge will be 100% fatalities and I wonder if they had any warning or possible sign that they could've evacuated the workers. Quite a tragedy.
