Im surprised this has not happened before - at least to this scale. Im also thinking that, barring a combination of a mechanical (eg. rudder failure) and a simultaneous massive gust of wind - some are accusing this of being a planned accident.

There was a pilot on board as per requirements. Surely the sandstorms in that area have been a known thing for 100 years. Also, ships are limited to 6-8 kts.

It's poor tugboats, isn't it? These things are probably literally dead in the water during the passage and a fleet of tugs gets them through.

Remember that story about the licensing qualifications of pilots from Pakistan? "Yeah OK, Buddy - I'm totally pilot"...
Methinks the Suez tuggers might have gone to the same school.

Ship had 2 egyptian "suez canal pilots" on board; guys who are specifically trained in navigating the canal.

Don't believe tugs had anything to do with it.

I think we might be missing something here. Some sort of structural issue could be the real reason it ran aground.

I heard the reason it got stuck to begin with was because it was loaded with those.

Wouldnt it just be cheaper to blow this thing up at this point?

Blowing it up makes the problem worse.

Its all about the insurance company at this point. When the cost of lawsuits and fines exceed the value of the ship and insured contents, doing something like detonating the ship in 2 is not a bad idea (tow one half out).

Of course they could just nuke the desert they are in and widen the canal at that point. Operation plowshare?

I can't find the article, but I read somewhere that if the ship breaks in two, it'll be a minimum of 1 month to remove the chunks.

Then they should nuke the thing with a gigaton blast, blow 1/2 of the earth off and solve all of our problems in one fell swoop. OK maybe not.
