    Illegal?
I don't think you can sell a vehicle that isn't yours (or has a lien on it).
He definitely took care of the lien, but technically in the wrong order. And I think that's an important distinction.

The buyer is not the wisest in not either being present to see the lien being paid or else having confirmation the lien is paid even if it isn’t released ahead of time. I wouldn’t say Bruce did anything wrong, it’s more a case of the buyer being lazy/far too trusting.

I agree that it's a massive duh on the Buyer.
It's a seemingly horse shit distinction if the Seller is fully going to service their debt, etc. But I still think that, technically, it's a pretty serious no-no.

*I'm no authority on this, so I'm not here on a big soap box. I have never been in the position of selling a vehicle with a debt or lien on it.
    ...
Is that a flex? It shouldn't be.

When the mechanic drives that same car for the inspection, what makes you think they wouldn't notice a slipping clutch? If anything they would probably be more qualified to notice.
Again as written, it was not slipping during the test drive. However the engagement point was way out to lunch and I was able to get the owner to reveal that he knew the clutch was on its way out.

I typically don’t pay the lien off until a buyer is going to commit. I have sold a few vehicles only days after paying off the lien and it can take 30 days for the lien to officially be removed. I provide the buyer proof of paying off the lien and it’s never an issue as they can still register the car.

Liens are gross. I have only had one, typical domestic aggressive financing deal, and it grossed me out.

I don’t think I will ever “finance” a vehicle again.

The less time I have to spend in a dealership finance office the better.

I suspect that people living in Aspen can find enough cash to buy a car just by checking under the couch cushions

Covid was awesome for that. Cam Clark Finance office was pretty ineffective with me over zoom.

The day I sold my truck, there was also 2 others selling vehicles to the same person. We all loaded up in the buyers truck, went to the bank while he got the bank drafts and back to our original meeting location to part ways.

I talked with the buyer for a little while and discussing about going to see the lien paid in full. He said he stopped doing that x number years ago and has only been burned once and it was an older lady that he had to track down over it, something like 6-7k.

Now I agree, he's very trusting that people are going to take care of whatever debt there may be and I don't think I would do it that way but he's comfortable with it.

Right, so why wouldn't the mechanic also notice the engagement point was way out to lunch and make note of that? Sorry if I am misunderstanding your point.

    Because mechanics are idiots?

Seriously, good mechanics are few and far between.

With a hydraulic clutch, you also can't really tell as they self adjust.
