If a dealer was price competitive and had good select, I think many people would gladly buy from them. In fact many people do. Paying GST doesn't seem to bother most people.

I’m surprised this has made it to p2 and gathered some debate. Sooo why would anyone buy private when dealer can work with my schedule, let me test drive workout a hassle and price is competitive with private sellers?
RoFL! I can think of 25 reasons and they ask rhyme with percent.

Maybe we need to define 'high horsepower'. What I immediately think of is what 99% of dealerships won't touch with a mile long pole, hence the no test drive rule. I basically don't consider anything factory equipped to be high horsepower, unless we are talking Hellcat or above. Or to be flexible, factory + 50%.

Your average driver is capable of crashing a stock ass fucking Corolla on a wide flat straight road like Deerfoot. So I'd say anything over 500hp, or over 400hp if it's rwd and manual and light, would be considered "high horsepower" for this thread.

man, I have even refused to get into a high end sports car, never mind drive it. My neighbor's brother showed up one day in a beautiful AM DB9, seriously, one of my dream cars. I was drooling over it and he came outside to chat. He offered to let me drive it, and I refused. Asked if I want to sit in it. Absolutely I do, but I can't even afford to repair a paint scratch on a car like that, so I didn't even touch it lol

Spotted the loser bagging on peoples cars with no intention or means of buying.

No one needs a buyer like you.
Haha, have you ever taken one of your cars over 4,000rpm? Do you not fuck your wife to save her for the next guy?

Anytime I test drive a vehicle, I inform the seller I am going to take it to redline once. Misfires and bad running that do not occur at low rpm typically show at high rpm. If your vehicle can not withstand one run to redline, which it is designed to do every day for years, you clearly are shit at maintaining your vehicles.

Are we talking about buying a $5k jdm shitbox with a cranked boost controller or a $75k used E63? I think the two discussions have been conflated here and people are arguing apples vs oranges.

I only take my car to redline once it's been warmed up, test drive monkeys might not be so kind. I'd rather not have someone wear down the clutch, granny shifting when they should be double clutching, from a 15min joyride just there to waste my time. I've sold two "high" hp cars, a turbo swapped STi and manual E90 M3. I sat in with the STi buyer, M3 sale was a different circumstance where I just tossed him the keys and told him to come back once he was happy.

Whether you want to do the dirty with my car, or my wife. You can do whatever you want once you own it, my guess is you can’t afford either.

I don’t need your money any more than you want the car, until money changes hands you aren’t entitled to shit.

I don’t and wouldn’t own $5k JDM shitboxes so I have no opinion on the concept.

Conflating or not, Zachs sounds like the kind of loser who you are trying to filter out before you even exchange phone numbers.

Guy is coming to look today, and has agreed no test drive and I will take him for a spirited drive. After he ponies up for an inspection and we have a price negotiated, I will let him take it for a test drive as the last step.

I always let potential buyers drive and I ride along, except once when I didn't give a shit if the guy ever came back.

Does 580hp count as high horsepower?

Also, anyone who thinks I'm paying for an inspection on my own car can go fuck a baby.

Some cars are designed to bounce off the rev limiter all day long. Some are not. I imagine top end, higher HP cars once warmed up properly, its ok and the chance of engine damage are pretty small. Take your average Matrix and start redlining it and you ll end up with a pile of scrape metal. Size up the buyer and sell accordingly.

Does it go over 4,000 rpm? That’s the only thing I have heard is important.

Do y'all check the driver's license before a test drive?

I don't think I own anything that I'd like to rev to 4000rpm.

Dry sump and 85-hundy. Always a success.
It's warmed up by now, right??

I can see that the definition of a "high hp" car is quite different from the responses in this thread...

I guess some thinks that a stock civic is high HP and requires a cash deposit for test drive...

Sounds fair. Are you willing to let us know what high HP car started this discussion?

He has mentioned an E93 in the past.
