There are height restrictions in Calgary, not sure if 10' ceilings on both floors would be too high.
Soon the guideline for great communities gets ascended into law we will basically be able to build 20 story condos on a 50 foot lot in an R1 neighborhood.

    Somethings to consider.

    1. Extra steps to climb on every floor.
    2. More air to condition leading to uneven temps if your HVAC is undersized or not setup properly.
    3. More wall to fill with art
    4. Need to adjust window sizing, which can get very expensive. Might have limited window covering choices due to absolute length.
    5. All doors MUST be 8' doors or even taller custom doors. 6'8" will look stupid. Maybe add transoms above each door.

We went with 9', 9' and 9' because wife complained about #1. haha.

It changed the design of our house to where we had to ad a turn to the stair case. Both of these staircases used to be straight.
Great point on stairs @benyl , thank you. Our floorplan already has a fairly narrow 5'something hallway and I suspect moving from 9' to 10' might require too much compromise in the size of the office or mudroom.

I am probably going to be in the minority here, but personally, I would skip on it for a couple of big reasons to me.

    1) initial and ongoing costs. That extra foot of materials is going to add up quickly. The OP already stated that it is not an insignificant amount of money. Also, ongoing added costs to utility bills will add up over time.

    2) adding height adds zero to your usable space inside the home unless you have some crazy art piece that needs it. It doesn't give you any added SQ/f, no added storage, nothing. Except for a couple of added stairs.

If it were me, I would rather invest that money into something that is a tangible return to my and my life. spend it on pushing a wall out that extra foot, bigger garage, better counter tops, tankless heater, etc etc etc...

Again, this is just my $0.02, but if it were me, I wouldn't spring for it unless money is no issue.

With the price of lumber, upgrading our home build from 9' ceilings to 10' on the main is a not-insignificant sum of money.

Like as in, would you rather a hottub so you could rub nipples with @89coupe , or 1' taller ceilings?

Would you rather a red knobbed stove so you could flex on @killramos , or 1' taller ceilings?

Would you rather a (admittedly rather crappy) trailer so you could bunk up with @ExtraSlow or 1' taller ceilings?

So, for those beyond ballers that live with 10' high or even taller ceilings, worth it? or nah? These are important questions and I need answers.
10’ or even 11’ for the win.

was your crescent heights spec build 10'? Must have been.

edit: looking at the photos i want to say 9' but it's the kind of thing that I am not skilled in judging based on a photo.

Nine foot clear basement, ten foot main, 9 foot second. Nine foot ceilings make spaces feel nice, ten foot open mains make floorplans seem palatial.

If an extra foot of ceiling height causes a utility issue you have no business building a house.

Basement it's very important that you plan HVAC and shit to be 9 feet. My basement is nine feet except right down the fucking centre where there's an HVAC bulkhead. Stupid.

So many builders don't consult HVAC during design so they just have to cram it in like that. It isn't the end of the world It's just poor planning.

I mean, my long skinny duplex infill kinda ends up with certain obvious choices making sense from a construction standpoint. But still....

You can build an econo box of 8 ft ceilings and still put the goddamn ducts in the floor joists for not much money if you plan proper. People are lazy.

Roger that. People are stupid too. Wife told me our main floor was 9 feet not 10. Didn't believe her, but the tape measure agrees with her. So I guess I'm not a credible source of information on the benefits of a 10 foot ceiling.

Never guess your ceiling height on a shoulder to towel bar ratio.

Thought more about this, and I think I'm in the "not worth it" camp now. Unless you are looking to have your house in architectural magazines, it'll be really tough to make it look normal with regular cabinets, windows and doors. 9 is plenty tall.

You should be happy your wife is with you despite her ability to measure accurately.
