    Default Upgraded door locks.

    Time to upgrade peeps.

Concensus is what is really important if mounting to a wooden door frame is to get a really long strike plate, six inches or so - preferably one plate with two openings for deadbolt and turn handle. I'm not going to do solid metal door.

As for the lock itself, any pointers welcome.

Buy a 3-point door. My townhouse front door has the handle turn and moves 3 latches and then when you flip the deadbolt it extends all 3 of those further into the frame. So you get 3 dead bolts, top middle and bottom. Other than being a bit heavier it functions perfectly as a normal door and you wouldn't know otherwise unless you looked.

Also upgrade the screws holding the strike plate to your frame to longer screws as well so it's harder to kick in

No way would I do a wood door in Calgary, what with their scintillating R-1 rating.

If you're looking for maximum kick-in protection, something like a Strikemaster reinforcement kit may be worth looking into.

Just remember, it's incredibly easy to remove window glass panes.

Just buy cheap locks, nothing you do to your door is ever going to stop someone from getting into your house who wants to get in.

The only time I bought good locks (Mul-T-Lock so contractors couldn't copy keys) and did what I could to reinforce my door was when I was in a Condo and there was no windows or other way into my unit except through the door, so it made more sense to reinforce it. If you're in a normal home, just make sure your insurance policy is up to date, maybe get a couple cameras and call it a day.

If you are dead set on making your door less kickable, it's very difficult because the weak point is usually the frame/trim and not the door and whatever you reinforce, there is probably another weak point that you can't reinforce as much. One thing you can do is take out the decorative screws on the hinges and put in 3" deck screws.

You can also use things like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Door-Jammer-Se...7644861&sr=8-8

    Or these: https://www.amazon.ca/Security-Child...7644881&sr=8-5

Even with all this stuff it's only going to make it take a few extra kicks from a crackhead to get the door in than it would otherwise, or they will just go for a window. Waste of money IMHO.
