    Default Charity Gambling - discussion

Been hearing the hospital home lottery radio advertisements lately, and I guess that sold out. Was wondering, when it comes to your gambling dollars, does the "charity" aspect factor into your decision-making process at all? I guess in Alberta, technically all kinds of legal gambling are "charity gambling" in one way or another.

    Anyway, discuss.

Gambling isn’t smart, lotteries are about as dumb as it comes in the pool that is gambling. I don’t do it.

The fact that a stupid tax is run by a charity changes nothing. If I’m going to make a donation it better come with a donation receipt, I prefer Justin pay for part of my donation.

Ive been getting some for my birthday for years after I told everyone to stop buying me stuff and donate the money to charity. They kept giving me cash instead, so I use the birthday money on tickets.

Edit: For my 40th birthday, I got an extra amount from my in-laws, so $400 in tickets won me a shitty $500 Tv which I sold for $300 and bought tickets for a different charity lottery. Of course I didn't win anything from that one. Would have been hilarious if I kept winning, selling, and buying though.

I treat it as entertainment. If paying $500 or so gives me a couple months of wondering what it'd be like to win X, sure why not. Charity part is just an excuse, no different than drinking because it's a "holiday".
I have a gambling nature, but not an addiction. $500 for a night of Blackjack/Craps? No problem. Anything won is just frosting on the proverbial cake.

I want us to win a Beyond pool sooo bad so we can all rub it into killramos face.

Hah, yeah, I play a little of various gambling games. Enjoy blackjack in Vegas, but that's more for the atmosphere and people watching than anything. It's much less fun in Calgary. Basically can't stand poker in casinos any more, but do play with my bros a bit, but I look on that as hang-around fees. Used to do the stampede lotteries, but that was partly for the free admission to the grounds, plus discounted rodeo tickets. Looks like they ditched those perks, so I'm not that interested now. Haven't done the home lotteries for a decade or more.

I do enjoy the lottomax once in a while, but that's more of paying $11 to play pretend with my bros or my wife about what to do with the millions than about anything else. Decent value, I think.

Total gambling expenditures in Calgary is probably less than $200/yr, and maybe $500 for each trip to vegas. I spend more on worse things in both places.

I’ve been pee pee slapped that making fun of the lottery is an off limits topic on this forum. Of all things, that’s where the line gets drawn.

Pretty much this. As long as its not going to an org/cause i completely disagree with then it makes no difference to me. I gamble because the prizes appeal to me not because of where the money goes.

The way you phrased that makes me uncomfortable.

If it's got Rotary Club in the title, they're getting my money. I benefited incredibly from the Rotary Club many years ago and I'm more than happy to hand them hundreds of dollars forever after now that I'm able to in spite of the fact that I'm very unlikely going to win whatever house/boat/cars/houseboat they're offering.

It makes me feel better about wasting my money, and I enjoy looking at the pictures of a fancy house in an undesirable location. I only bother with the Hospital lottery though.
