Because you won't twist the hot water tank right off its connections like you would with an 8-foot breaker bar.

That’s different than the 8 foot long breaker bar method?
You can apply even gentle force onto the nut with a breaker bar. An impact could as stated twist unnecessarily or do damage elsewhere.

Why do you think with super stubborn bolts people suggest to not use impacts. I will use an impact once I know stubborn bolts are loose.

Wat?!! Who are these stubborn bolts people and why would they suggest this??!

I think the only reason it wasn't literally called a "stubborn bolts gun" was that impact gun had a better ring to it.

I’d wager most people with an impact gun at home won’t have one sufficient enough to outperform a 2’ breaker with a snipe. I have several electric and pneumatic guns and only my new Milwaukee would likely do the job.

Even the water is hotter in Aspen
I watched the help change the Brita filter on our Aspen HWT one time... It was hilarious watching this little filipina wrestle a filter 2/3 her size.

Just replaced the anode. Was easier but I was unsure on how to drain the tank as it seems like the pressure dies as soon as you turn off the water intake.

    This is my old anode

I think you need the inlet water valve still open while you drain?

Wouldn’t it continue to fill while you are draining it though?

I think yes, but it'd flush the sediment out, I think. I'm not actually a water tank expert.

    3 step process..

Shut cold water feed valve off
Open tank drain and let drain
Open cold water drain after and use something to reach inside tank to move sediment out

Force of incoming cold water helps break up the sediment.

Inside of tanks are generally line so be careful with what you use. Get a camera or a flashlight to get a good look inside. I have a $25 borescope from Amazon I stuck in mine to get good light near the bottom.

Do you have to open the pressure release valve to break the vacuum too?

That's the most completely fucked anode that I've ever seen, ever.

My tank already had been drained of sediment a week ago, I just wanted to get a bit of water out because the new anode was displacing water and there was hot water coming up the anode hole and getting me wet. So i shut off the water intake and opened the pressure release valve but then maybe only 4L of water came out and then it stopped running. So i just put the dope on it and bunged it in and screwed it tight. I guess I had it a bit too loose since last week because water had escaped around the anode.

What's the mass difference between the two? Kilograms worth?
That doesn't sound all that long to me, but I'm no plumber.

you need to break the vacuum. what you gotta do is shut the supply water off to the house, open the taps, and then drain the HWT. that way air can replace the water you're removing.

Think of holding your thumb over the end of a straw.

If the anode was out during draining, this problem solvers itself.

So after showing my buddy my corroded anode he asked if he should replace his. Hot water tank installed 2012 - they moved in 2013 never replaced anode or drained tank since.

He has a power vent state select tank and the replacement anode is only 16"!!! - I found a 32" one which will work however the anode is under the power vent fan meaning we would have to remove that first. Has anyone done this before is it a big job? The install manual for that particular tank does not show any instructions on how to replace the anode.

Shop around as they have flexible ones that have joints for this purpose.
