Tried a 30" breaker bar no bueno. Will find a metal pipe tonight hopefully. I have about an extra 3 foot of room. Although I suspect I need to somehow wedge the tank to stop it from moving.

How do you know when you need to flush your water tank?
...
So after draining and flushing the tank I set the tank back to setting A (although to get the gas on I had to turn it on to very hot) and I measured the hot water and its really hot and its reading at 155 F. Ive turned it down quite a bit now, but we are still experiencing a loud bang (sounds like if someone hit a metal container with a mallet) at night time when the shower is on.
I doubt flushing the tank will have any effect on scale buildup in the tank, only remove loose sediment. I’m not sure if one could descale a water heater like you would a coffee maker, economically. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
When I get my new anode rod later this week I was thinking I could poke one of those snake camera things down the hole to see how badly degraded it was. Im not imaging much of the anode rod to be left.

My anode in my tank from 2009 was completely disintegrated but the dip tube was fine. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Ive got a nestcam sitting in the basement looking at the hotwater tank now so hopefully I can capture the bang sound.
Why would anyone ever use something other than an impact gun to remove one of these?
Because you'll twist the hot water tank right off its connections. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Because of fine control that a impact doesn't have. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
That’s different than the 8 foot long breaker bar method? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
