Anyone have any experience with reupholstering a couch?

So, with the move to NYC in June, I need to down size. My fiancé and I bought a recliner couch and matching loveseat 3 years ago and unfortunately the couch backs have completely gone to shit (and me being cheap; didn't buy damage coverage). Kinda want to resell the set but with the damage I probs wont get anything above 50 buck for the lot. Called fibrenew first and they said they can't do much cause it is bonded leather and it will do this again. SO now I am looking for suggestions, reupholstering, anyone got experience?

I used this kit to fix a scrape on a cushion and touch up the color. It did work but haven't done a large area before.

I followed a lot of online videos on repairs. Seemed to be easy. Color blend was just color the whole cushion and the seams reduce the color difference noticeably.

Maybe Degreeves could un stitch and put in a patch.
Sometimes they can be costly and then use a dye kit to match the surrounding areas of that cushion.

New upholstery, especially leather will cost you more than the sofa/chairs are worth. You can always try to send pictures to a few places and ask about the single section/pillow, but it will be tough to match and make it look decent. Cant hurt to send pictures to a few shops to ask though.

Your best bet may be to sell for $50 and move on...

Get a quote though because you might find you're better off just selling them as-is if it's just cheap bonded leather.

I've 'sold' a few couches on Kijiji/Facebook and IMO you're doing good if you can find someone who has an appropriate vehicle and can come pick it up for free. There are just so many for sale for either cheap or free, not many people want to pay up for a used couch.

Don't do this.

The method with the leather repair kit I linked to is roughly this:
Scrape off the loose flecks
Scuff sand
Spread on the rubbery compound to fill the splits like drywall compound.
Just so its not clumpy.
Let dry.
Sand it down and then I recall a rubbing alcohol that melts it on the edges to blend the rubber.
Then once dry, paint with the dye and they tell you how to blend it.

It's been 5 yrs since I did it and just now the leather color is wearing away but the rubber accepted the dye better and is holding.
No dye ever came off on my clothes or skin.

Here's what it looks like. If I re-dye the couch those repair lines will go away. Like I said the rubber holds the color better than original leather over time.
