Default Jackin' it - What's your favourite kind of jack for all seasons? non-MEGA-thread

My nearly 20 year old floor jack is rusting out, and it's heavy as hell anyway, so I'm on the prowl for a new jack. I don't do nearly as much mechanical work as I used to, and I am not planning to get back into it as a hobby, so maybe a dedicated floor jack is overkill? Bottle jacks are smaller and cheaper, and should work in most situations? Bonus is they are something you can carry around with you for camping trips in case of a blowout or something, probably more flexible than a floor jack for that purpose. Second bonus is that they are easier to store in my garage which is already stuffed with bullshit. Maybe I need more than one jack for my truck, trailer, van etc? Those aluminum floor jacks should be lighter, but are seriously expensive. Seems like overkill for a guy who uses a jack maybe once a year.

Anyway, not really a specific question, just want to talk about jacks. And wanted an excuse to start a thread and use this GIF.

I have a low profile floor jack ( actually I should really check if it’s low enough profile for the new car ).

Does the job, but the other 364 days a year it’s big and heavy and doesn’t have a logical place to store it (currently wedged under my husky toolbox where it doesn’t really fit lol).

Does Milwaukee make an M18 fuel version yet? Seems like they can do pretty much anything with their M18 system these days.

What’s really tempting to me is one of those quick jacks. Lift whole car. Do whole job. Done.

Some of them are even portable enough to keep in storage in the trailer etc.

Dunno if they meet the standards of the 4 post versus 2 post master race

Someon suggested an air-powered bottle jack, and I looked it up, and I was aroused.

Bottle jacks are sketchy AF when trying to do anything with a car because they have a small base (which can be fixed) and a poor means of pushing against the frame. They can slip easily.

If you are lifting vehicles.. use a floor jack. The quickjacks are nice but they sit pretty low for a lot of vehicles and one of the disadvantages is they don't lift straight up and lift at a bit of an angle which you have to take into consideration.

I myself am in the market for a new floor jack as my 3 ton jack is sketchy af when releasing and makes me very nervous.

For use for your truck, camping. Every day carry JIC type jack.

Hi lift jack is the way to go, don’t cheap out and buy an optional base for it. Also buy the winch kit. Now you also have a winch in a pinch.

If you need a new floor jack, Costco brings them in a couple times a year. Nice option.

Stick with a floor jack. You may not need it often now but think about in a few years when your kids drive and you may have to change sets more often.

+1 for the Costco floor jack model - heard great things and that’s what I’m planning to buy after my Canadian tire special floor jack kicks the bucket. It’s about 10 years old now and starting to get long in the teeth so probably another year or two for me.

I picked up a low profile 3 ton (2.5 maybe?) from costco recently. Its great and was not expensive. If you can wait, they go on sale now and then. Bonus is can be returned if something goes wrong.

-1 for bottle jack for anything other than keeping in the trailer for emergencies.

I have a big low profile that works for pretty much everything, but then I have a smaller floor jack that isn't low profile, but for a regular height car, it's small and light.

Just swapped off the winters and my jack (also close to 20 years old) is super rusty and looking sketch. Great timing on the thread chap!

I was planning on grabbing whatever low profile jack Costco has. Do they still have them these days?

Costco jack gives me mad regrets. I ended up buying a motomaster which was quite expansive but I needed it in a pinch. Couple weeks Costco had what appeared to be the exact same jack for half the price.

    Costco jack FTW.

Got this one last week while it was on sale for the same price as the Costco one. Sadly it's back to the outrageous normal price so you'll have to wait a few months likely before it's back on sale.

Someone post when they go on sale at costco then. Maybe that'll entice me.

Can solve this problem with a back yard shed. I store absolutely zero, toys + garden + non-car related items in my garage. 2 sheds for that.

As far as the jacks, if you had just cars you could get by with a Superstore 40$ jack (1 ton, still have mine from 10 years ago, works fine) - but with a truck, that immediately dictates something heavier.

I have the same one since late 2017. I think I got it for under $200, I want to say it was $190? Great floor jack.

This one seems like a good one too, but I think I've seen the price lower. Still not bad at the current sale price:
