Decisions are made at the margin for nearly every large purchase. 10k has been enough for plenty of people to pass on a house. Plus, as several people in this thread have noted, the distaste if paying $5k in tax is larger than in paying an extra $5k for a more expensive vehicle.

Whatever, it's clear that expensive cars are a societal evil that must be reduced, if not eliminated entirely. We have a variety of sin taxes in this country that we feel are totally reasonable. Being rich is about as socially acceptable as smoking these days. It should be done out of sight ideally.

This will be crippling for German luxury brands who all carry several vehicles at the $100k threshold as a lot of buyers will opt for lesser (lower margin) models or turn to less expensive Japanese/Korean luxury brands.

If no one sees or hears you in a supercar, does the supercar really exist?

I’m all for it, and you tightwads who car afford this shit regardless of the increase should quit bitching. If this makes you question whether you’ll buy something in these ranges it’s pretty likely you couldn’t afford it anyway.
Whether you can afford it or not is irrelevant. Most sane people are against blindly giving the government more money for no reason. Especially rich people.

Is there a way around this with dealer installed options? You buy the car, but the seats wheels etc are "upgraded" at delivery?

As if the reliability of these brands needed to get any worse. Oh well, people are creative, I'm sure we'll see some interesting workarounds soon.

Seems to me like, unless the tax is pinned to MSRP, then a creative lease arrangement would essentially make this tax uncollectible.

Pinning the tax to MSRP is the only way this works.

Example, 100k car payment at 5% over 5 years is the same payment as an 80k car at 13% over the same term.

Car company gets the same money, you pay the same money. But scenario 2 government doesn’t collect lux tax.

Think of how easy this would be with electric cars. Just pay for whatever horsepower you want.

I feel like there have been several occasions where a vehicle I wanted was in my opinion 5-10k overpriced for what it is and subsequently didn’t buy it.

So I guess my point is yes, I think my actions line up with my rhetoric and this tax would indeed lead to me not buying a car.
I'm in the same boat as you. If I know what I want to spend I will take more time to find the car I want within that budget rather than pay up for it with a tax. At the same time, unless I have significant networth 5x+ the value of the car I'm buying I'm probably not ready to buy the $100K car anyway.

People buy cars that are 20 percent of their net worth?

At some point having some land in Montana will be cheaper than taxes on toys... register everything down there like the big boss Raj2

Can you register cars to a P.O box?
    Serious question.

The play is to buy every new huracan and Aventador that’s coming into Canada before 2022 and sell them for 5-10% above what you paid after giving them some gentle driving.

All the creative ways can be found in BC, what works and what doesn't . We're just so used to not having PST or any kind of luxury tax.

Mexico plates are good too... insurance is optional

Not sure the details, but know a German resident in Canada on a tourist visa with a Mexican plate jeep that he keeps in Canada and has had up here for like 3 years

Nothing works in BC. You just get fucked. That’s one of the reasons I will always be an Alberta resident. They tax you to oblivion on used cars that have already been taxed for F sakes. They’re bloody communists!

The trick moving forward will likely be to register as a business and purchase vehicles under the business as inventory. It will probably dodge the tax because it’s not a luxury item but a company asset.

Folks. We are relatively all above to well above average income earners.. and that is for Alberta. Nationally, we are definitely the target. Another wealth transfer

Exactly, it's gonna be the same with the new tax. People keep bringing up leasing/ "dealer options" etc, those have been tried and mostly failed in BC.
