Very sad indeed. Musk said Autopilot was not engaged. I think Autopilot got disengaged when the curve came up and the vehicle could not handle it. Isn't that the case in many lane keeping assist vehicles? Any Tesla owners can chime in? If Autopilot was not engaged, how can no one be in the driver seat? Passenger let the vehicle set on cruise just fine until it couldn't negotiate the curve. So crazy these battery fires are so difficult to put out.

^ I have tested my Genesis HDA on some pretty harsh corners and it can handle it pretty good. Always surprises me.

Were these guys doing the water bottle trick to bypass the autopilot disabling from no driver feedback? I know my Genesis will disable if it doesn't sense a tiny bit of feedback from the driver for a certain period of time. Strapping a water bottle to the side of the steering wheel will bypass it apparently tho. No, I have not tried it.

Is steering wheel feedback the only failsafe? I have no idea about these auto piloting cars but isn't there any weight or other sensors in the chairs or even seat belt sensors to make sure some ones ass is in there or did these geniuses just bypass it. Or maybe the car manufacturers just didn't think anyone would be that stupid to try something like this.

Have never tested with AutoPilot on but I've backed out of my driveway before without my seatbelt on and the curb put my weight off the sensor for a split second.. The Tesla kicked me out of drive into park right away.

I heard there was a "Tesla crash", and quickly didn't really care. Fact is, Autopilot or not, Teslas are involved in a fraction of accidents compared to vehicles which are completely manually controlled.

Now hearing there wasn't even a driver, I care even less. Idiots will do idiotic things.

From my original link "normally, when the fire department arrives they have the car fire under control in minutes, but this one went on for 4 hours."
Fakenews by the lamestream media. Fire took 3-4 mins to put out straight from the fire chiefs mouth.

Battery fires are another beast. Very different than a gasoline or petrol fire.
FD is going to need specific training as more Tesla's are on the road.

Hurr durr, fuck you guys are muppets.

“With respect to the fire fight, unfortunately, those rumors grew way out of control. It did not take us four hours to put out the blaze. Our guys got there and put down the fire within two to three minutes, enough to see the vehicle had occupants. After that, it was simply cooling the car as the batteries continued to have a chain reaction due to damage.

“We could not tear it apart or move it around to get ‘final extinguishment’ because the fact that we had two bodies in there and it was then an investigation-slash-crime scene. We had to keep it cool, were on scene for four hours, but we were simply pouring a little bit of water on it. It was not because flames were coming out. It was a reaction in the battery pan. It was not an active fire,” Buck said.

According to Musk there was an 'autopilot' capabaility on that particular car but it wasn't switched on.
