Default Selling your car at auction? Anyone here done it?

Anyone with recent experience selling with an auction company like Adessa or Regal recently?

I'm thinking of using them just because I'm not too overly concerned right now with how much I get, just want it gone.

I'm mainly curious, for budgeting purposes, how much LESS than the private market did you get from selling there?

I'm not going to do it if I'm going to get about the same as some random Kijiji lowballer...

What car is it? If it's reasonably new, and especially if it's suitable for export, those used car superstores seem like the lowest hassle option.

It's hard to imagine you'd do any better than $1000 less than kijiji lowballer circus. And I'll put in a lot of work for $1000 of tax-free earnings.

I'll estimate you'll pocket about 40% less than you would in a private sale.

I think that's actually pretty accurate based on the offers I've gotten and what one of these auction places have said.

I'm selling the wife's 2013 Juke and I'd say ya it's a pretty hard car to sell, most think it's ugly as fuck but there ARE a small cult following out there, I had one lady come test drive, then tell me after she can't buy it because she has to fit 2 car seats and an 11 yr old in back, like fuck you lady, you didn't know this before you came and wasted my time? lol

Why not just sell it to a dealer? That's what I did with my truck. They just cut me a cheque and told me to fuck off.

Not worth it unless the car is junk, wait for the right buyer and sell privately. I’m surprised you haven’t been contacted by the sales bros at house of cars

I'm surprised too lol it's been weird, had my ad up for 3 days now and just one person has come to look and 2 messaged me with lowballs....I even made it clear in my ad that I don't care if you re-sell for profit.

I was hoping that based on others' experiences, that one could get MORE from an auction sale.

it doesn't hurt to drop it off at regal and see what happens, you put a reserve on it so you can be sure it wont go below your expectations, and sometimes if the low bid is close they will even call you and see if you and the buyer want to make a deal which isn't necessarily the reserve.

just looked at regals market report think on their site, looks like you might be priced a little high, but not unreasonable. the low ones have mechanical issues.

I feel like any car for sale at an auction has something wrong with it that the owner doesn’t want to disclose during a normal private sale DD process

Note that those prices do not account for seller's fees etc.

Avoid Regal but Adesa can bring good money as it’s more of a dealer auction. Have been having great success there recently, selling stuff for more money than exporting it.

most cars at auction are dealer trade ins where the dealer has better options to make more money with the space on their lot. then smaller dealers will go buy them. Private consignments at auctions usually do feel like there are hidden issues, but often it's just like this situation, cant be bothered with dealing with people.

I've bought and sold a few bvehicles at auction, it's typically worked out well, recently bought my wife a minivan which was an ex CoC with low Kms, it's been solid for us for the past year, no way i'd have gotten it for the price i did with the mileage and condition in a private sale.

Private sale is risky, auction is risky. Lowest risk is lowest price. See my "tow rig" threads for details.

there are no seller fees, it's buyer who pays the fees. IIRC the seller just pays a minimal storage fee, like $10/run or something.

EDIT, just found an old thread that says it's 10% sellers fee,

I guess my point was less so that there are legitimately issues with the vehicles, but in my head there is higher risk of that.

Meaning, the vehicles will be priced at a discount accordingly.

No shit?! Well, today I learned...
I thought there was always a Seller's fee, albeit smaller than Buyer's.

Adesa 100%, they bring a huge amount of bidders. Auctions are bringing more than private sales in many cases right now. Doesn't seem to matter if it a pos 10yr old Hyundai or a 2021 truck, prices are insane. You can set a reserve if you like, easy, hassle free transaction.
