Default Is It Wrong to Fold in My Neighbor's Mirror?

I live in a condo building, so parking stalls in my building are already a little smaller than usual. The guy who parks next to me own a full-size GMC Crew Cab Sierra, which takes up a a significant portion of his stall resulting in his mirrors hanging out into the stall on both sides. To make things worse, he doesn't always park his truck straight or even in the stall (the guy who lived in the unit before him owned a Nissan Titan and, to his credit, was always able to park it straight and even).

I've asked him to fold his mirrors in when he parks, which he does 90% of the time. But when he doesn't, I've considered folding his mirrors in for him because otherwise I'm barely clearing both his mirror on one side and some structural columns on the other. Do you consider it offside to fold his mirror in?

    Don’t touch other peoples cars.

I can’t think of an acceptable exception to this rule.

Would the exception be not hitting his car with my mirror? I guess I forgot to mention that. If I don't fold in his mirror, I'm grazing his mirror by millimeters

How are you even getting in and out of the cars if you can’t park without coming “mms” from the vehicles next to you.

Sounds like a bad time. I’d sell the condo.

If I can't comfortably walk around my car in a parking stall because of someones mirrors I will fold them.

This is basic truck etiquette and someone who doesn't care.

Agreed, better than damaging your vehicle or his. Fold in those elephant ears.

Condos and big trucks are about as harmonious as condos and big dogs.

depends if it is a power folding or manual and is it on the driver side or passenger side? Also, the best solution to this is to buy a 3500 AT4 GMC denali and park right on the line with your tow mirrors covering his windshield. You gotta out truck him.

Why don’t you ask him if he minds if you fold it in the next time you see him? If he’s doing it 90% of the time, I’d imagine he wouldn’t have any issues but it’s best to get his approval.

I do that too .. sometimes at Public parking, many times, when I was getting back to my car, other car was parked very close, and I just folded it's mirror, so I could get in.

You've talked to him once already, why not just ask him again if he minds if you fold his mirror when he forgets?

In condos, as long as people are between the lines they are unfortunately free to park however they want. We had this issue come up several times when I was on the board of my old condo and all we could tell them was to talk to the owner as they technically aren't doing anything wrong.

    1. This isn't "general/Lounge". This is hardcore auto discussion!

    2. I'd move his shit of you're generally already on friendly terms.

    3. I'd also jerk-off on his driver's side door handle.

Curious: do condo boards typically have rules about car length? At one point, he had a F-350 Super Duty that stuck out a good 5 feet into the driving lane (this is backed up all the way against the wall).

If I were that guy, since we already had the convo, I'd be fine if you folded them in.

Yes, most Condo Bylaws state that all vehicles must be contained within the stall boundaries meaning not sticking out past the lines into the driveline.

I can only speak for where I used to live, but they had to be within the stall lines and not obviously obstructing the area people drove through. It's also something that unless it was bothering someone, it's unlikely it would be enforced.

We also had a rule against those little storage sheds and also motorcycles people liked to park in front of their cars (making an otherwise normal sized vehicle stick out a bit) and it was never enforced, but it probably would have been if it was causing issues. Nobody bothered to move them when it was time for parkade cleaning either.

Just do it and leave a note with your number on it if he has a problem (be nice and make it sound like you did it for his sake, eg. not hitting his nice truck)...Im sure he just forgot.
