I dont know how these priests that killed many people and nazi's that killed many people are different, when they find the rest of the bodies they should find the ex-school workers and charge them with murder. Yes the government was complicit but im sure the government wasnt giving the school administrators a mandate to kill people.

I read some shocking and disgusting stories on reddit about that Kamloops school yesterday.

So with the renewed interests in renaming Langevin and Grandin schools, is there a reason why John A McDonald is getting a free pass? I haven’t really looked at it again since the bridge renaming deal, but IIRC langevin’s involvement was merely a quote supporting the actual architect of residential schools, which was PM McDonald.

I went to school in Ontario in the early 90's. We were not required to take history past grade 10. What we learned about in history regarding the first nations was their traditions, as well about their heavy involvement in the British and American wars, including the war of 1812. This made sense because the war of 1812 happened heavily where I am from and we have several large landmarks named after Chief Tecumseh. Most of the portrayals of aboriginal people to us in Southern Ontario was that they were extremely intelligent and tough warriors. We also learned that these different tribes regularly fought against each other for land, there was a large war between tribes titled the "indian war" in the 18th Century. They were brutal against one another. This is very different than the nomadic tribes on the prairies would regularly work together just to survive the brutal winters.

I don't know where the residential schools were in Ontario. What I do know from my government involvement is that we did not live up to the agreements that we signed (treaties) a long time ago. It's confusing there because the treaties were signed both giving land that is now in Canada and the United States. Largely the United stands has told these first nations to go pound sand, whereas the Federal government has given a lot of money to these same nations in Ontario. There are several First Nations in Ontario that are actively trying to buying land with those settlements to re-establish themselves in the area that was supposed to be given to them. Trouble is no one is selling them the land, and the government cannot force it. So it's an interesting situation there.

John A. Macdonald hasn’t gotten a free pass, and conservatives threw a hissy fit about it.

    Example:

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...nald-1.5705287

A banner, hoisted as the statue was pulled down, said that Macdonald has "bloody hands" for disenfranchising the Asian community and for being one of the architects of the residential school system.

Kenney responded to the protest action with a series of tweets, saying the "extreme left" is "responsible for this kind of violence" and that Macdonald overcame personal trauma to become Canada's first prime minister.

"This vandalism of our history and heroes must stop," he said.

"It's right to debate his legacy and life. But it is wrong to allow roving bands of thugs to vandalize our history with impunity."

Well if there will be a huge expedition of ground radar runs on all schools, Catholic church should at least pay for 1/2 of that bill if not all of it.
They should be paying for 1/2 the reparations as well.

Sorry, I meant in the context of renaming schools. Should’ve been more clear.

Depends on where you are I guess. It’s already happened and pushes for school renaming are also a part of the War on John A.

Good to know, thanks. Calgary still a bitch for not cancelling the right person tho.

If they want to cancel everything, they better be consistent in cancelling EVERYTHING.

Reparations will happen either way, might as well get someone else to foot the bill. At least the money the church gets is voluntarily given from their flock, unlike my tax dollars.

Even better, how about we start taxing the church like any corporation and the money can come out of there.

That’s always a popular thing people like to spout… but does the church generate any income to be taxed?

Donations aren’t income. And they have lots of expenses.

At best you are asking for donations to the church to not be tax exempt? What other donations to organizations can be we carve out as not tax exempt? Can we do that for environmental lobbyists?

All that aside, legislating wealth transfer is just socialism which is terrible and lazy policy. I also don’t buy that it’s happening either way.

Sounds like Mormon church is benefiting from Gamestonk.

I think Churches and NPOs should pay cap gain tax. So it'll make sure they spent everything donated instead of amassing power and influence thru investments.

They are exempt from property taxes. That's a start.

I also can't believe you don't think Trudeau-bux are coming to FN survivors and families. You usually aren't that naive about his spending.

Maybe Trudeau will give them money. What I don’t buy is that they are entitled to it.

If people keep voting for Trudeau I’m sure he will keep burning money. The sky is also blue.

It's not really renewed interest I think, how many times in the last 11 years has Nenshi called on the CCSD and CBE to change the names of these schools?

It's interesting to watch this unfold alongside the BC logging stuff, it really highlights the double standard that people hold when it comes to FN people. On one hand, we need T&R and to rename things because of the actions taken in the past; but then we have a group of predominantly white people who have no apparent issues with forcing their way onto un-ceded lands in defiance of court orders and the wishes of the Nation to try and impose their will despite the Nation not wanting the "help"

I was trying to remember if learned about it in the early 90s, and I don't ever remember the words 'residential schools'. In hindsight, what I do remember is the phrase "Tried to take the indian, out of the indian". I didn't really put 2 and 2 together until much later when in the early 2000s a beyond member told me about it. At first I didn't want to believe such a thing could happen in Canada... but sure enough it did.

We can't keep apologizing as a nation - we either have to shit or get off the pot as far as actions go to make amends and help these people that we fucked up bad.

I really hope this gruesome discovery gets us to giddy up and get going on the TRC call to action list from 2015.

Every year I look for some report on how we are doing on the TRC call to action list - below is the AFN one from 2020. IMHO it really makes me feel like as a country we are all talk, no substance. Looking at the list below, IMHO the vast majority of the items which i would say are "talk", we've done well, or made progress on. The ones which I would say are "substance", little progress has been made.

    Significant Progress:

    • Language and Culture (13-17)
    • Training for Public Servants (57)
    • Museum & Archives (67-70)
    • Media & Reconciliation (84-86)
    • Sports & Reconciliation (87-91)

    Moderate Progress:
    • Child Welfare (1-5)
    • Education (6-12)
    • Health (18-24)
    • United Nations Declaration (43-44)
    • Youth Programs (66)
    • Commemoration (79-83)
    • Missing Children (71-76)
    • Newcomers to Canada (93-94)

    Little Progress:
    • Justice (25-42)
    • Royal Proclamation & Covenant
    of Reconciliation (45-47)
    • Settlement Agreement Parties & the
    United Nations Declaration (48-49)
    • Equity in the Legal System (50-52)
    • National Council for
    Reconciliation (53-56)
    • Church Apologies and
    Reconciliation (58-61)
    • Education for Reconciliation (62-65)
    • Business & Reconciliation (92)
    • National Centre for Truth
    and Reconciliation (77-78)

I am not sure when/if the curriculum changed for Social Studies but currently....Residential Schools, the 60s scoop and missing and murdered Indigenous women is/should be taught in all grade 10 classes (Related Issue 2 Unit).
