Neither does the referendum question. It’s not supposed to. The people asking the question don’t care. EDIT: but just as importantly, removing equalization from the constitution doesn’t actually obligate the federal government from allocating money the same way. Equalization as a codified program predates the Constitution by a couple decades. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Equalization is a formula that determines how federal tax money is allocated. The tax money the feds collect remains the same with or without equalization. Without a formula saying how much needs to go where, it just become discretionary for the federal government. So It isn’t dropping equalization but keeping equalization, because with equalization Ontario and BC can’t get anything with the $20B+ the program ties up. It’s a straight up bribe to them to support dropping equalization because apparently people think that’s something that would help Alberta and they hired a fake consultant to make it fake happen.
You want the formula changed. Which is to say you support Notley’s position (and Klein’s. And Lougheed’s. And everybody else who agrees with the concept of equalization but still wants to see more per capita transfers from the feds to the provinces). But that’s not what is being proposed.
