Default The Justy - 4x4 monster

I had the luck to be a driver in http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/ for a few years when I lived down in Houston. Endurance driving in a POS car at 100mph, rubbing other cars, at night, etc was a major thrill. The cars all required full roll cages, 5 pt harness, etc.

My friends in Calgary, inspired by this event do something similar in a dirt field. They call is Le Melons.

in 2019 my team won the event (most miles) in the amazing Subaru Justy I picked up (Thanks Hagen). It was spring, and very muddy! The car was unstoppable and reliable. https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/412...ighlight=justy
In 2020 my team didn't win, but we still won the 'best passing' trophy after getting pit-maneuvered and completing the remaining 180 to loose little ground, while a judge was riding along in our car. It was -30C and the car that won was a Fwd focus with studded winters.

Covid has put the event on pause, but I am still preparing the Justy for battle.

Justy as-bought. It has an engine swap to an EFI motor.

For the upcoming race (TBD), I have some themes in mind, but I want to focus on traction.
The Justy has 12"x4" rims. I ordered a kid's dirtbike tire, since it'd fit well. I was going to put some HD tubes in it, since the load rating wasn't quite good enough. The entire Justy weighs about 1,500lbs empty.

As you can see, the dirtbike OD is much smaller then the stock tire. Although this'd be great for fender clearance, we'd loose too much ground clearance. That combined with the poor load rating, I'm returning the dirtbike tires.

So, I found these. ITP Mud Lite II atv tires. Rated for 500lbs each! They'll fit the stock Justy rim. 23" OD, 12" ID, and 8" wide is the smallest I could find. Perfect.

    For clearance:
    Fenders - trim.
Front shock - I'll test it. If the tire rubs, I'll a) add a 4x100mm wheel spacer, or b) make a 2" lift plate and mount it at the bottom of the shock mount.
Rear shock - I don't think this'll be a problem, but I'll be test fitting it. I may have to fab a ghetto 2" lift for the rear. I don't care about driveline angles.

The mud lite OD is only 1" more then the stock tires, so I don't expect it'll kill too much power. We'll see. My tire speed will def be less in the mud.
If it's icy for the race, I'll screw in a ton of these ice studs: https://www.amazon.ca/Marrkey-carbid...3703022&sr=8-6

I'll update this when the mud tires arrive. For now, I'm still bombing around in the Justy. This was yesterday on my ATV trail at home.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

    Santa came

The dirt is from smashing the inner fender + rear trailing arm to make room.

I was worried about the fronts clearing the strut. But they do. Phew.

I took it for a ride. There's a rub on the back right against the shock because the shock it not connected to the upper shock tower at the moment (part on the way).
Over all, it fits great. I have not even trimmed any fender yet. With a friends help, I'll do some up-down with the suspension and see if I need to.

I can't wait for the next lemelon's race!!

Nice small chassis. Sweet build. Love the tires.
