    Default Miami building collapse

Almost looks like a perfect demo. You'd have to take out a few columns for that to happen.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

Dude, that totally looks like a legit demo. I see one flash of light right at the start of the video which might indicate an explosion, but it could be anything. I watch a lot of these demo vids, and this looks spot on so much that if it was presented as such, I wouldn't question it.

People were definitely inside it, apparently dozens missing still. It's on most major news sites by now.

Yeah, I think the power was cutting off as the building came down. It happened last night so I'm surprised that this is not getting more news coverage.

It didn't look like a poorly maintained building. You can see what it looked like on Google. There is a parkade at the bottom of that section and it looked like something happened near the bottom.

Built on reclaimed wetlands, supposedly been sinking since the 90s.

A Florida high rise that collapsed early Thursday was determined to be unstable a year ago, according to a researcher at Florida International University.

The building, which was constructed in 1981, has been sinking at an alarming rate since the 1990s, according to a 2020 study conducted by Shimon Wdowinski, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University.

When he saw the news that the condo had collapsed, he instantly remembered it from the study, Wdowinski said.

“I looked at it this morning and said ‘Oh my god.’ We did detect that,” he said.

Wdowinski said his research is not meant to suggest any certainty about what caused the collapse of the condominium. The building was sinking at a rate of about 2 millimeters a year in the 1990s, and the sinking could have slowed or accelerated in the time since.

Regulation cost time and money. Why do you need those?

isn't most of Florida either eroding into the ocean or sinking into the swamps?

I had a coworker whose condo in Victoria BC was sinking rather rapidly into the ground.

I wonder how many buildings along Miami beach are built on similar ground. Something went wrong underground is a good possibility. There is a new building but it's on the opposite side. Perhaps the new construction affected the water table?

Miami is so incredibly nice and special that if you rent a car in Orlando, they make you sign in 3 different places that you will NOT take it to Miami and that all insurance is completely void if you violate your policy by going there.

I'm going to say it was something to do with the foundation/footings/pilings for that building. To me it looks like maybe underground water flows eroded the material the foundation was anchored to until eventually there was nothing left to support at least a few of the main structural columns. I'm not a structural eng. though. The flashes of light are consistent with electrical arcing from wires being severed, probably feeders to the HVAC equipment on the roof.
