Default All inclusive Resort Stay, how do you tip staff?

I hate tipping, not even the cost of it, just the hassle of always having to do it, and trying to know what is an appropriate amount.

    How does beyond do it?

I've heard give a noticeable tip at start, like $20, and then smaller tips after? Do you tip every single transaction?

Bring a stack of singles. Give out a few all the time

Big tip up front sounds nice, but you have no idea if the person serving you today will be around all week.

I think the only wrong way to do it is overthink it.

Yeah, that's the way I do it too. Guess it's tried and true, why change it if it's not broken.

Best solution is don't go to all-inclusive.

Time and place for everything. Been to many all inclusive and to non all inclusives.

Depends what you want out of the trip.

My experiences with tipping at an all-inclusive:

    https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/375...40#post4200440

I'd suggest having a lot of singles and tipping a couple bucks here and there as you see fit.

I'll usually tip $10 at the start of the day, once we've found our spot. Never had any issues.

I usually give $2-300 to the food and beverage manager and ask that they distribute it to the restaurant and bar staff and make sure I’m treated well. Never fails.

Yeah, if you value quantity over quality, all inclusive is the way to go.

That's kind of trusting isn't it? But I guess you see it in the service so the money must trickle down.

I trust absolutely no one in those places haha

Giving a big amount to the manager is a good way to ensure the manager remembers you and that you are treated like a VIP. No way to be sure the money trickles down but suppose that may not matter to everyone.

It worked well the two times I tried it down in Mexico. Hyatt Ziva in Cabo and Barcelo Palace in Riviera Maya. Both times 95% of the staff treated us like royalty in all the bars and restaurants and we didn’t have to worry about carrying any cash around the resort. I would usually tip around $10 per meal and $1-2 per drink anyways, so $300ish over the course of the week is about right. It is a bit trusting but I’ve always had a positive experience trusting the management staff at the resorts I’ve stayed at.

I usually leave $10/day for the housekeeping staff, more if I make a big mess, $5-10 at fancier dining meals, and then $1-2/drink at bars or $20 once at the start if I know I'm going to be a while and the bartender isn't going to change. Ends up adding only around $250-300 to the trip cost and it has a very noticeable impact on the experience/service IMO.

You hear of some resorts like Sandals claiming to fire their workers if they accept tips but in my experience they are pretty happy to take extra money haha.

I haven't tried the manager thing but I think I would prefer giving it directly to the workers.

USD is what they want in most places except Cuba where they prefer Euros or Pounds. You can tip in local currency too but often the exchange rates are really bad.

Can’t say I’ve ever met a Cuban who scoffed at US dollars or convertible pesos

They aren't going to turn down anything you give them but when they go to exchange USD into CUC, the exchange rates on the USD are artificially poor, so Euros/Pounds are better for them if you're going to be exchanging the money regardless from CAD before your trip. They can't really use USDs in Cuba so they have to go and exchange them and extra fees are added to USD exchanges. You would be better off just tipping in CAD and leaving a bit more than usual.
