You need a real authority like Avenue Magazine to guide your standards in the D.R.

Why would you go to the D.R. when you could just take a tour of your local sewage processing facility and slam a case of Lucky Lager in a snowbank?

I went to a pretty amazing all inclusive in DR. Private island, small, fantastic food and drinks. But even then I doubt i'll go back to DR ever.

+1, some great resorts there but I wouldn't suggest leaving them haha.

It's been like 15 years since I was in the DR, and I'm sure I went to cheap resorts. That may be a factor.

Also don't like that it's further from Cowtown than Mexico. Probably makes more sense for folks from Taranna or other far-east shit holes.

I went to Cuba AI once. It sucked. I don't want to do the Walmart of vacations any more. And cuba felt like the walmart of AI carib vacations.

There's no way you should be using Cuba as a precursor for all AI holidays. Cuba was once of the worst places we did AI at as well - especially with the food. I have had some wicked time at other higher-end AI holidays in DR, Mexico, Jamaica etc.

Cuba is the same as the DR in that sense - there are some very good resorts and also some bad ones. People have a habit of going to one resort in one country and then assuming every resort in that country is a certain way. That is not the case, but the cheaper resorts in both countries are more likely to disappoint. Cuba also has some 2-3 star 'resorts' that are basically slums haha, but nobody should be going to those. Cuba off-resort can actually be pretty awesome, DR not so much.

If you want a guaranteed 'premium' all inclusive experience just go to a Sandals, you are far less likely to be disappointed and they aren't much more expensive. They are some of the best resorts without getting into the ultra-pricey boutique stuff, and as a bonus no smoking and no kids ('Beaches' is Sandals with kids allowed).
