“Give your head a shake”? no need to jump on someone for asking a question, I was asking if it was feasible to look at an engine from a car that’s getting junked or to do the timing chain on it, assuming the cost is relatively similar. I’m not here looking to stuff a built engine into a 12 year old car.

There are a fair amount of used engines to be had under $2k and I assume a timing chain and whatever other miscellaneous stuff is needed wouldn’t end up that far off cost wise. I am not worried about resale value, I plan to drive it till it dies/keep it as a spare for the foreseeable future.

The reason I think there is an issue is a sudden rattle that has developed and a misfire under full acceleration.

I reached out to George but haven’t heard back yet, I’m sure in the end I’ll just end up getting him to do the chain

Chain will be cheaper than a motor swap even if you're doing the work.

Possibly just need a new tensioner and guides. Keep oil clean and it'll be good.

    This. All of this.

The TSI chain is accessible from the side. Not saying it'll be a cakewalk but a timing belt and water pump isn't lemon squeezy either

If you emailed him, he's spotty on that. Best to call in.

Clearing codes on a vehicle with fucked timing isn't going to help much.

One tooth shouldn't have valves kissing piston in that. It's a simple enough job, I would just get the guides and tensioner replaced and reset the timing. Any backyard mechanic shop can handle it if you're on a tight budget.

If you can clear death rattles with OBD, the world would be a more peaceful place.

Sounds like fake news. These engines are bullet proof and can take near infinite amounts of boost if you rebuild them completely.

What do people think it’s 2007 or something?
