Default LF: advice on VW 2.0 TSI issues

    Hey all,

I have an ‘09 Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4Motion that I believe the chain has stretched on (~205k kms) I bought the car less than a year ago and was told the chain tensioner was done but I think I was probably lied to.

Anyways, I am wondering a few things:

    • Anyone know of a good donor car to do an engine swap? And is this a good idea or no, I’d love to get a lower mileage engine in it.
    • I’d like to learn to do the timing chain/tensioner myself but don’t have a proper setup, would anyone here be willing to help and make a few $ along the way?

I am sure people here will tell me to take it to Tunedub, and it may come to that but I’d like to explore other options first

The chain in on the back of the engine. So if you are capable of pulling it yourself you could probably do the chain yourself.

Any other reason you want to swap the engine?

Carbon buildup on these engines is a concern, that’s a big reason for wanting to go with something newer. I also don’t want to go through all this trouble and then have a turbo or something else fail. At 200K+ kms it’s getting a bit long in the tooth, but the interior is still great and it drives nicely otherwise.

I don’t have the confidence to take a timing chain job on completely by myself but am eager to learn.

In any case I’d talk to tune dub about the new engine, they will have a better pulse on the available engines floating around than anyone.

A buddy of mine got a new 2.0T in his GTI when a trail derailed and destroyed a bunch of tiguans. His mechanic had an in on finding one.

What leads you to believe there's motor problems or soon to be motor problems?
The cost of an engine swap may not be worth it as you would not get your money out if you sold the vehicle.
How rusty is the vehicle underneath?

Not too familiar with VW motors but you'd think there's a way to do this with motor kind of in the vehicle. Dropped motor mounts or something.
A full removal is sometimes not needed on other cars.

4 banger timing chain is on the side

6 cylinder/8 cylinder is on the back

Tunedub rules. George is straight up tell you what's wrong. He's good shit.

If it's the chain rattling on turn off/on, keep oil good and I bet it goes another 100k.
Nissan VE motors can do it.

If you're doing the chains, why not just pull the manifolds and get it walnut blasted? It saves you from having the same headaches with a different engine later.

Alternatively you can just let'r buck. if its miled out and old already, who cares. Run it into the ground and make it a future you problem.

+1. Putting an engine in vehicle with 200k km on it is nuts, IMO. The rest of the entire car is going to start falling apart soon anyways.

    Then, we're in agreement...?

Spending 50-100% of the vehicles value on replacing an engine when the rest of the car has been well used surely isn't a prudent plan, is it?

edit: I think I see what happened.

Full engine swap on 12 year old car. I mean seems a bit ridiculous but what else will he buy for 5k if the rest of the car is solid?

Does my 2015 Q5 have a tensioner chain? How do I do preventative maintenance on this POS!?

Just looked, only affected earlier Q5's as per my original research... knock on wood. Good luck OP

lol oh if it’s timing chain it has tensioner. Some are plastic so that’s why they crap out

Regular oil change with good oil and you’ll be fine

    I asked that too.
If just some rattling, it'll last for years with regular maintenance.
    Other symptoms are quite bad.
