Default Movies that are great on 4K

What's on your guys' list of movies that are worth having on 4K? I mean not just entertaining, but are visually stunning.

I haven't watched them on 4K yet, but Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049 are on my to-watch list.

    @rage2 , I know you're gonna have a pretty comprehensive list.

    Anything Disney or Marvel.

    LOTR

4k is pretty meh tbh, doesn’t make a huge difference. HDR on the other hand is awesome, love the extra color and blacks.

Properly mastered IMAX footage is the shit. MI6 fallout is my go to demo reel for 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos. The helicopter chase scenes near the end was shot with IMAX cameras and presented in 16:9 just for those scenes. The audio tracking is awesome too. Pretty much my go to demo.

CGI shit looks awesome too, so Ready Player 1 is another favourite demo of mine. The first car race scene for Atmos audio, and later scenes with lots of lighting flying through the VR world.

And ya, HDR is a must. MI6 is sharp as hell HDR or not, but the reflections off the water in HDR is spectacular. Killramos also correct on any marvel film. They're all terrific visually, but a bit meh audio wise. Anything with Thor lightning is a good HDR show reel.

Spiderman into the spider verse is my go to if you're trying to test out a new TV. The use of bright colors in that movie is amazing
Check out Infinity wars, John Wick and El Camino. I find the national geographic animal planets to be very very good as well

The largest benefits of 4K, much like 8K, are not the resolution itself but what comes with it. Uncompressed Dolby Atmos / DTS-X + HDR is a lot more impressive than the resolution bump for most people. Also, without a very large screen or projector setup, the resolution increase is difficult for most people to notice especially since most people sit much too far away from their TVs.

If you want demo material to impress with your Atmos/DTS-X setup that are also well filmed:

MaxMax Fury Road (Everyone uses this one and there's lots of Atmos effects in the first 2 minutes)
    Fury (battle scenes)
    Overlord (opening scene)
    Godzilla King of the Monsters
    Unbroken (opening scene)
    Gravity (specifically the deluxe edition)
13 Hours - Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (fight scenes)
    1917 - ch 13
    Aquaman
    Arrival
    Deepwater Horizon
    Hacksaw Ridge Ch9
    John Wick trilogy
    Midway (attack scenes)
    All 3 newer Mission Impossibles
    Ready Player One
    Bladerunner 2049
    A Quiet Place
Most recent Marvel movies (Avengers, Captain America, Spiderman, Thor: Ragnarock, etc.)
Game of Thrones battle of Hardhome is one of the best Atmos scenes I've experienced (S05E08)

LOTR and Hobbit Trilogies were updated to 4K/HDR/Atmos in Dec. 2020 but I haven't seen the new ones yet to comment.

    Honorable mention:

Matrix lobby scene. It's not Atmos but a good receiver will interpret it really well.
Tron (Lightcycle battle) - more of a subwoofer torture test

If you just want to see the sharpness of 4K, fire up any of the YouTube 8K nature footage channels or Samsung/LG demo footage. Or any of the more recent "Planet Earth" style nature docs.

Avatar is 1080P/SDR. I actually fired it up a few months ago because of how fondly I remembered it and it was very underwhelming haha - probably because I'm used to modern CGI and Atmos, but it looked like garbage. Avatar was so impressive back in the day because it was one of the first high profile movies in IMAX 3D. James Cameron is super weird about it but we might get it in 4K/HDR BluRay in 2022.

Avatar 4K is supposedly done, just waiting on James Cameron to give the OK. Who knows.

One to look forward to is Gravity. That's coming out in 4K in October. If it's mastered off the IMAX print, it's going to be incredible. It's already a de facto Dolby Atmos demo. I believe it was the first Atmos film, and considerable time was spent to master the audio positioning to showcase Atmos.

I would guess Rango? And perhaps Coco?

    Terminator 2?
The Cell? My Ganesh, that was a film with some incredible art direction. Very under appreciated, iMO.

Coco, along with any other Pixar film, looks awesome. Animations generally looks great in 4K.

T2 is an interesting one. I felt they went too far in restoring it, especially the dark scenes, with a resulting image that’s a little too soft in a battle to remove all film noise. The HDR highlights looks great, but it wasn’t a really colorful enough film to show off wide color. Still, for a 90s movie it looks awesome restored.

I was just guessing because I remember seeing a scene from Rango last year on basically the worst TV money can buy (RCA) and it still looked incredible.

I spoke with John at Base Electronics and he mentioned the re-mastered TOP GUN has the best Dobly Atmos configuration he's ever heard.

I didn't get a chance to hear it in his shop though

Gee, after I watch something in good 4K, watching 1080p makes me angry.

Even 4K on my dinky 39" is materially better.

Man, I think I might watch that this weekend. Plus J.Lo can't be beat. Don't have it in 4k though. In fact most of the movies I have are still dvd lol
