I kindof wish the CPC didn’t run a candidate in Jagmeet’s riding, because he would have lost and that would have been hilarious.
Yep and everyone loves a leader attempting to justify why that happened.

Common refrain in the USA is "why do we have a sea of red governed by islands of blue?"

If you looked at this map without knowing anything about Canadian Politics, which parties would you think governed?

I'd think Blue, Teal, Orange, Red... yet we have basically the opposite.
Good thing we rule by population and not land mass? Or are you saying only land owners can vote?

Sort of kind of... in reality, ridings vary from 18k electors to 128k electors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popula...ederal_ridings

I'm not suggesting that seats should be decided by geographic means, but it's interesting to see how a few key urban centers (particularly the 905) are critical for the Liberals and how little support they get from rural communities.

Significant efforts should be made to have every riding have the same* population.

*Obviously there will be several +/- 5~10% variances across the country, but that's still manageable compared to the goat rodeo that's currently in place.

Gross. I guess we should be grateful for the big bad NDP dude, Joy Lachica for taking a bunch of her votes away.

At least the US has the senate so individuals states can still have an impact. We can't even use that as a model due to useless Atlantic Canada.

I was going to say that I'm not sure how much difference there would be given most of the most-populous ridings were in Onterrible, Quebec, and BC but then I thought I'd better put in the work before making such a claim.

I looked up the Top 20 and the results were surprising... Definitely helps explain why the Conservatives do better in popular vote than they do in seats.

I was just thinking how ridiculous the election results are from a geographic riding perspective, especially if you remove the 3 seats from the territories which are massive spaces for their populations.

If you looked at this map without knowing anything about Canadian Politics, which parties would you think governed?

Democracy will always have geographical limitations. Canada's shark gets jumped somewhere around N. Ontario or Manitoba.

Again, it's not about riding size that causes the Liberals to lose the popular vote. When an NHL team wins 9-1 they get the same 2 points for the win as they would have if they won 3-1.
In many areas where Conservatives win, they trounce while in many areas that Liberals win, they simply win. But each victory only gives one seat.
Revisiting my previous example, let's compare Hair Justin to Barlow and Rempel.
The PM of the fucking country, the Golden Child, The Leader only won by 12k votes in his riding (Papineau).
Rempel won by 17k votes in Nose Hill and John Barlow win by 36k votes in Foothills (actually, 38k more than the Foothills Liberal).

So, you've got Barlow who's a back-bencher and Rempel (who I'm not sure if she'd hold a cabinet position with the Conservatives in power) doing radically better than the most recognizable Liberal who should be cruising to victory in his riding.
Those add up to Conservatives "winning" the meaningless popular vote.

Regardless of their margin of victory, more people are in favor of the Conservatives leading the country than the Liberals.
