Funny, but with the large # of kids in extended family, we actually take 7 people fairly regularly in our E Wagon. But yea, the majority use case for 7 passenger vehicles is to separate the kids to stop the bitching.

Is the 3rd row a new feature/option for the E wagon?

Nope. It's been there last 2 generations at least. Trunk converts into jump seats that's good for 2 pre-teen kids. It's only available in non AMGs. This gen it's standard, last gen was an option.

We needed that 3rd row, so we went with the non AMG instead of the 53. By the time we had ours optioned up, it was only $4k or something cheaper than a 53.

“Needing” a third row sounds depressing

That's because you don't routinely have 6 people to accommodate I would assume.
Exactly. If we didn't always have at least 6 people to accommodate, we'd have a different car.

Fuck all that driving a minivan without needing to routinely have 6+ passengers

I'll say it again - if you actually need to utilize the seating capacity, there are very few options to also carry the "stuff" of 6 or 7 people.
The van I grew up with was a '95 GMC Safari (Chevy Astro twin). Sat 8. Definitely went on many family road trips with 7+ passengers. NVH was definitely not friendly in that thing. My dad got really good at IRL Tetris.

Don't think there's an existent equivalent nowadays.

Where I'm from, those became so hilariously "standard issue" on the Reservations that everyone called them "Indian Vans".
This was even deemed politically acceptable because the owners would often even put stickers on them that said "Indian Van" because they thought it was funny.

    It was a different time.
Can someone (a millennial) show me which SUV I need to burn down in order to symbolically atone for these sins?

That's right. I forgot that I need to burn a symbol to symbolically symbolize my reconciliation.
    Because symbols are bad.

But yes - new Tahoe is a much better looking vehicle. If seats 7, may be an option for OP.

I don't know about the S213 but I know for the S212 E63 you can retrofit the third row from the non-amg S212.

S212 works as it’s just the spare tire in the way. S213 doesn’t work because there’s additional bracing as well as the airmatic tank in the way. Not that it matters to me anymore as adding a hitch requires cutting up a bunch of shit under the car including exhaust shields.

Just came across the new Grand Cherokee L. Maybe a good option to look at especially if she likes the XC90 styling

I thought people considered 130k jeeps to be a good idea in 2021?

The outgoing Grand Cherokee models are getting DEEP discounts. We got quoted $10k off msrp.
