French people know how to make dessert. Chinese don't. Red bean paste is not dessert.

Mooncakes are the fruitcakes/egg nog of chinese culture. Expensive and heavy desserts served and given as gifts during the holidays. Every culture has some version of it and its never all that good because if it was actually good we'd be having it year round.

I'm not disgusted by it but its not worth the price or calorie count for me. That being said there's a lot of variation in these things and the costco version is just one kind (lotus seed paste with salted egg yolk). I've had pretty delicious versions of them in China filled with nuts/seeds and candied fruits all deep fried. You can probably find a pretty delicious version of fruitcake but it won't be at safeway.
this is a useful post for context. For the record, I haven't run into a fruit cake I like either.

This is the reason I’ve stopped buying Maxim products. Also they are ‘blue’.
But it’s hard to resist their frozen/chilled dessert type mooncake

I would stick with this brand for QA. Things has gone south last decade as tons of sources for mooncake has been sourced from China and ingredient quality has not been kept up.

Traditional is basically a bake pastry crust with tons of lotus paste in the middle. Price goes up depends on how many salted egg yolk is buried inside. That's what you'll see the most.

You will see other variants (just drop by T&T for their branded series) some with taro filling, some with low sugar version for diabetics etc.

Then there are frozen one but they pretty much tastes like ice cream with chewy mochi shell.

And if you want to do an expensive prank:

If you want to try some that's made by local, Golden Happiness is our local Calgary/Canadian brand.

But I don't find them that good.

    Costco mooncake.....of course no good

But they are only 1/3 the price of real mooncake. Some are over $100 a box ...

They vary markedly in quality. Most are terrible though. Chinese can't make a dessert to save their lives.

One of my Chinese employees brought some in that didn't suck, they were super expensive though - $40 for a box of 12 or some shit.
Are you a panhandler? $40 for 12 isn't even good enough for my nanny...
we only get the $65 for 4 MaXim bombs

seriously though. Chinaman AF here. agree most are bad. I only like the lava custard ones but they're expensive AF. definitely not worth it, even the week after at 60% off.

If your question is why do they exist? It's a glorified fortune cookie.

    @Buster , go buy this.
    https://www.tntsupermarket.com/69643...h-2-yolks.html

If you don't like those, then you don't like moon cake. That is the brand you want.

I usually buy the 4 yolk ones, and I don't know how the fuck my wife can eat a whole case of that. That's 16 fucking yolks. Fuck sake...

Here's a good reminder suggested serving size is 1/8 to 1/4 of each cake.

Also, anyone who puts any form of bean paste into a desert should be sent to a reeducation camp.
