Apparently, he was not asked to reprise his role but instead, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (guy with Morpheus classic sunglasses) will be Morpheus. That for sure really sucks unless they want to show a younger Morpheus for some reason.. Would be interesting to know what the story of this movie would lead to.

Nonetheless, I've always been a fan of the Matrix! Was a unique action movie at its time. With all the advances in cinematic technology, this would probably be amazing.

From what I've read, it's a proper sequel, and everything from the movies to the 2000's MMORPG is canon.
