Bit of a post summer bump with the new ethanol fuels. So I've been using co-op premium 91 since forever, and never had a problem with its premium 91. Of course, this year it's their new ethanol blend. This summer, I've been noticing that on some days, the car isn't making full power (car has built in hp meter). It's fairly sporadic, sometimes it's temps over 26C, sometimes its oil temps over 100C, couldn't nail it down. Tried different co-op stations, same deal. I'd switch to Shell 93 and it doesn't seem to crop up, but because it's sporadic I really can't tell. Other times it's happened I've had half tank of gas left, fill with 93 shell, and still same issue. Hard to reproduce.

Anyways, over the weekend finally had the perfect scenario where I was almost empty, had 91 co-op in the tank, and it was restricting power down to 370hp. Ran the car dry, pumped it full of Shell 93, and within 3 WOT runs and the car went straight back up to 435hp.

TL;DR, co-op 91 is shit now with the ethanol. Need to run Shell 93 now. Thanks Trudeau.
You think that in car HP meter is worth the lookup table it’s printed on?

Yes. The 0-60 time and my butt dyno all indicate loss of power. There’s also other interesting side effects when it pulls power, I lose the exhaust pops and burbles. Car throws itself into protection more when dialing things back. The worst I’ve had it was the car pulling back to around 340hp. Felt like driving an M2.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

Does anyone know why the Ethanol blends are worse? I see people run E85 because you can push higher boost and make way more power. Lots of people love that.

Do the ethanol blends just have lower density and you need a tune to compensate or are they just using shittier gas and then bumping the octane up with the ethanol ?

Less energy density means worse fuel economy and ethanol has shitty reactions with many older fuel system components (particularly gaskets & seals) and fucks them up earlier. Which thankfully has zero impact to the environment according to leading panels of teenage girls.

The extreme boost examples are true, but represent <1% of cases and the last thing those people care about in those cases is fuel economy.
