    Default UPS Recommendations

I need something simple but reliable. Had a short power outage this morning and I had a hard time getting my computer restarted without turning off the PS and waiting for the LEDs to discharge everything before it would actually start up! If I'm out of town my wife won't have a clue what to do and would be a nice piece of mind. I don't have a budget in mind but my needs shouldn't mean hundreds of dollars.

Costco has a couple options depending on your needs. I like Costco return perk.
If you're just running 150-300 W, the 450 VA should work. Give you around 5 minutes to safely shut down.

Otherwise, the 1500 VA should be good for most homes.

    3 year warranty.

Using this for my rig and TV

for most people 850V and 1000V might be sufficient too.

Also running this for my rig and NAS. But last power out seems to have killed it, couldn't hold the load any more.

If your PC ain't a gaming one, a 500w one would do and would be slightly over $100.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I guess what I should do is measure the draw from the wall while mining and see what my needs are to last probably 5-10min

    yeah depends on your load.
my mining rig is plugged in to a 1000, with 3 gpu and drawing ~440w estimated run time was 3-5min from what i recall

On a tangent: Finally moved over to solar to run a couple tablets. 100 watt solar panel pushed to a GoLabs R150. Tablets use about 8 watts apiece, solar panel pulls in about 8 watts when cloudy and 70 watts when full sun. Battery is rated at 204 wh. Hella expensive way to run tablets.

Since its the new LiFePO4, I'm hoping for but not expecting 10 years of battery life on everyday discharge and charge.

Would have preferred to use a Renogy Eclipse panel (for better use in shade and cloud) but the GoLabs only takes in 55 watts or so, that and the Eclipse is expensive.

Just stay away from cyber power.
They look like they got a bunch of nice features. But evrrything is wired through the battery. Might seem obvious, but once the battery fails, the unit doesn't alarm, it just up and disconnects your unit, so you take a forced outage, instead of it passing through AC from the wall like it should.

heard stories like that with CyberPower, been good so far with the 3 we have at home but they are only 2-3 years old but has saved us a couple of times already.
APC is good but expensive which is why I put our network and server in it

I can confirm this behavior (dead battery = no power from all plugs) for Cyberpower UPS. At least the PFC LCD line does that. Not sure about the AVR line.

Is there a decent small "power conditioning" UPS that isn't wildly expensive? I have a few places where the backup power isn't really needed, just want to protect the devices from "dirty power" and brownouts etc as much as possible.

I've got an APC H15 that has been solid for the last 10 years roughly. Probably discontinued by now but whatever the new equivalent is would be exactly what I would buy.

Just looking around seems that you'll end up spending $200 for most of these.
And they all seem to be rack-mounted, so it handy for home use. Hmmmm.

Really not sure how smart or necessary this is for me. Hate to spend $200 for each of the 4 9laces in my house I would need one.

I have always wanted a UPS for my rack, but always been put off by the cost and never bothered.

Alberta grid has historically been very stable. Having an auto reset for a mining rig is nice though. If you happen to have a lot, it would be more important to get one that allows staggered power on - on power disruption (they do exist)

APC has a 600VA small unit for around $80.00 CAN.

Do you guys have an opinion of APC vs Tripp Lite for a UPS? Both are pretty dependable brands as far as I understand...

My opinion based on over 30 years in IT, APC. Every time.
