Unlike HK/Macau, it was never official European colonies with a lease aggreement. And was lost to Japan around 1900.

Japanese won it in a war and lost it around WW2. But the ambiguity of San Francisco treaty make it a contention if Taiwan is independent or not. Chinese civil war resumes after Japanese's defeat and the loser relocated to Taiwan.
