Gaudreau and his family seems to love it here. The only other place he would go is the Flyers. Cheered them growing up, Kevin Hayes BFF plays for them, and his whole family including wife lives there. On paper it's a no brainer being UFA to go there, but Flyers are pretty fucked in terms of cap as well and no way they have the money to sign him. Flyers needs to drop some of their contracts to free up space. Honestly, I'd see a bigger chance Hayes gets traded here (with salary retained) than Gaudreau signing for the Flyers.

Hayes is a good player, watched flyers games quite a bit last 2 seasons, he has his moments, underperforming his contract tho. Along with BFF of Gaudreau, he's also Tkachuk Sr's cousin IIRC.

Hayes also just had probably the worst year of his life. Multiple injuries and lost his brother.

Mac's contract is up at the end of next season and Kadri is gone after this season... they're in for a world of hurt cap wise. Not to mention the Av's have gotten out of the second round once in the last 20 years and its this year.

I think a calgary offer of 8x10 will be pretty likely to be accepted. another team would have to do 7x11.42 to match total dollars. I don't see a way Calgary is better without him. If you had that money in your hands, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone better than him by any measure.

I'm not good at predicting contracts, just trying to compare total dollars. If someone else can offer more than 7x$11.5, then we'd have to offer more than 8x10 I guess. But would anyone offer 12? Seems insane to me, but I'm not an NHL GM.

My understanding though is that no other team can offer until he hits UFA. The only carrot the Flames have is the 8 year deal. Once he hits UFA, the Flames can only offer 7 year max just like everyone else.

At least so is my understanding.
