It's paid retirement in the sleepy family town. Genius.
Been to Columbus. It's a college party town with some football.
He clearly likes college girls (and coke).

I mean, it's a 90m direct flight from the coast, and they are division teams so he'll play in each city 2-3 times a year. Based on taxes he might even make more there.

Looks like in Ohio he will be about 41% income tax. In alberta it would be about 48%. So it's pretty much a wash in terms of money for him between Columbus and calgary
Can you not buy a house in another state and claim that as your primary residence?
I'm not anywhere close to his salary but if I was, I'd be living in a place in Switzerland like Murray Edwards or your favourite F1 driver or footballer.

Don’t NHL players have some bizarre special rules in the tax code based on where they play their games not where they are domiciled?

I feel like someone was discussing this recently.

Well you play half your games at home, I think.

This is true but it really smooths out the differences

I don't know much about taxes for hockey players. I'm sure it's a worthwhile difference between Canada and Florida. Places more moderate I have no idea.

Yea, they get taxed on where they play. His taxes might even be higher because of how many games he will play in NY/NJ with high taxes. Don’t think it was about the money tho.

I can appreciate that. Getting to play somewhere without much pressure or criticism.

Though, if he had stayed here and won they would name streets after him. Could've run for Mayor on a climate emergency platform and win.

Apparently, Cbj was his choice of destination. Even Cbj couldn’t believe it.

    It's to save face.

He was clearly hoping for Philly, but they weren't interested. NJ was never an option as their team sucks too and them getting Johnny was pointless.

This was a total fail from his agent.

    Alberta has 12.5% tax.

NHL players are employees, so normal tax code would be that they get taxed according to their place of residence.

I’m not sure this is true, but I really don’t care enough to find data to back that up.

It’s not true. Capfriendly has a tax calculator that takes into account away games because they’re taxed in the city you’re playing in.

NHLPA literally has an army of tax lawyers that sort all this out for the players.

Players are employees. I can guarantee you this.

I'm sure they're subject to other taxes because of their occupation.

The Capfriendly calculator was not written by anyone totally familiar with taxes, as CPP/EI aren't listed yet SS/Medicare is.

I’m not arguing if they’re employees or contractors. I’m just saying they pay different taxes on road games than where they reside. There’s tons of articles that explain how it works.

It really doesn't matter about the taxes... he left more than $15M on the table to play on a shittier team. At least NJ has potential and closer to home.

    A) I can appreciate the fact he wanted to be "close to home", so then take less to play in Philly where they may be able to fit you in
    B) If it's the under-the-spotlight narrative, then for sure sign in Columbus, but don't take a lesser offer
    C) If A and B were his intentions, then let it be known well ahead of time and avoid damage control

It's hard to imagine Columbus being his first choice since he has no ties to the city. Johnny and his agent gambled and, from most people's point of view, lost the bet.

Who would've thought a regular season game against Columbus in the middle of winter would be one of the most anticipated games of the season. Definitely deserves a chorus of boos.

I think it's obvious that his wife wears the pants.

What I dont understand is... he can test free agent and circle back to the flames if he wants. We still have the cap space. But he still took the lesser deal. Flames wouldve been okay with 10.5x7

I wonder if Tre got a desperate call from the agent yesterday after Philly pulled out?

Then again JG could have waited it out more and see who came calling if it was just money and change of scenery. With Columbus being a 90min flight to Philly it was prob his 4th option after the east coast options dried up.

Its the wife who I'd boo.
