Did you not watch a single regular season game? He had an amazing 100+ point season. With regards to playoffs, when it's the only goal of the entire series that needs to count, I'd say that's money well spent.
That's the problem with Gaudreau though- he's a little guy who has difficulty successfully elevating his game when the going gets rough. Yes, he got the goal that allowed Calgary to move on (what a game, btw), and his production clearly helped the Flames take tops in the Pacific, but the playoffs has always been challenging for him. Just as a supporting stat: He's over a point per game regular season, but sits at about 28% less production during playoffs.

He's a star with fantastic skill, no doubt, but his size has and always will be a factor that keeps him from being a superstar. And in case anyone thinks this Canucks fan is being biased, I would say that it's the same reason Pettersson is not yet one of the best players in the NHL, and it's also what keeps Hughes from being quite as good as Makar. Size matters.

Contrary to popular belief performance in regular season is meaningless in the playoffs. And his playoff performance has been mediocre at best.

Flames should have stuffed the stars 3 games ago. They shouldn’t have needed to rely on a last second goal in game 7.

    - Gaudreau led the team (and series) in scoring in round 1.
    - Gaudreau was the Flames best skater every single game.
    - Gaudreau scored the actual Game 7 OT winner.
    - The Flames as a team dominated the series (outside of Game 6). I'd pull the fancy stats to prove this but seems like a waste of time.
    - The Flames won the series.

So the narrative that Johnny needs to do more, is soft, can't perform in the playoffs (not all your words, Kloubek can share some blame) is kinda fake news Toma bullshit.

    Sorry, not sorry.

The point is Oettinger played out of his mind and that's why they didn't get smoked. Johnny was easily one of the best players we had out there and he was night an day difference from playoffs years past. Look at the stats, for 80% of the series the Flames out worked them, out hit them, out shot them. The Flames were the better team against an incredibly hot goalie. If we are going to be disappointed in anyone its Tkachuk game 1-3 and Jarnkrok's (lack of) production pretty much the whole series

I would argue Backlund was the best skater most days too.
But I'm not going to get mad at dat goodrow guy like sum.

Ottengier played above all his previous stats.

I was super critical of Johnny in the past. But he was the best Flames player other than Markstrom this series. His lack of goals is a combination of small sample size and one of the all time great goaltending performances I've ever seen.

1 He did not lead the team in goals scored in round 1 lol

2 Sounds pretty subjective. But guy didn’t even crack top 3 for TOI

3 Congrats. He scored a goal.

4 what series were you watching? Dallas had us wrapped around their finger. They had a plan and we played their game for 7 games.

5 by the skin of their teeth

Some other stats people want to ignore, Johnny didn’t even have a positive +- for the round. Mediocre shot conversion %. No goal conversions on the power play despite all the ice time he gets. But everyone wants to throw the word Star around?

If anyone deserves praise this series it’s Lindholm, Baklund, and Markstrom.

Johnny doesn’t come close to cracking top 3 in my eyes. He just played shift after disappointing shift and people seem to have a short memory for all the squandered scoring opportunities he had this round that he converted almost none of.

Watching Johnny you see the value of his talent and the fact that even someone his size can be effective in playoff hockey. Was he the most outstanding player on the Flames? No I'd hand that still to backlund where his defensive play, his puck distribution, hockey sense and grit stood out as the best Flame during the Series, as Raffl was on the Stars.

what aurgement, this is just fact! lol

jk, Backlund has taken some dumb penalties as he does cross the line. I really wish he was a centre who could score... he RARELY does... never gets the tips and almost always hits the breadbasket on every breakaway (which he gets a lot of short handies during the pp kill)

Johnny can't play the physical playoff game like other players, but this was the best playoff series I have seen him play. He had 8 points, and one thing people don't talk about, is how far he has pushed his defensive game while playing under Sutter. He is always coming back hard on the backcheck. His line was out at key moments to shut the stars down when the Flames had a lead as well. Not only is he putting up career numbers, but his all around game has never looked better

Presale for game 5 is basically sold out already, but there will be seats available through the next few days. Code if FIRER2 if you want t look yourself.
Since I'm not predicting a flames sweep, I think the 12 hours after the flames first loss is a good time to check again for resale seats. I have a few buddies who will be chicken-hawking game 5 pretty hard looking for 4 or 6 seats.

Man do I wish I was living in Calgary right now. What a series, and what a game.

I remember the 2004 series so well, we had season tickets and my old business partner had a box back then too. I remember one night when Kiprusoff went to Cowboys after a win, and the place just about fell in from the sound waves, people screaming themselves hoarse. Craig Conroy would call into the radio station after the home games while driving home, you could hear fans parked beside him at red lights calling out to him, and him talking back to them - so many great memories. Again, I wish I was able to be "home" right now for the battle of Alberta. I remember that 1991 series well too, my neighbor was a huge Oilers fan back then, and the battles we had were good times.

My 1st cousin played for the Flames in 2007/8 (Mark Smith), and that was my last year living full time in Calgary and having season tickets. Crossing my fingers that it works out I can get back for even just one game (family in Calgary has tickets and will let me have one home game). This is going to be a great series.
